Why is hands on, real-world experience so essential for students? Robb Berg, Principal of Design Workshop, highlights the importance of shaping the next generation of landscape architects through involvement outside the traditional classroom environment. There is often a gap between the theoretical approach taught in the classroom and the practical application on real projects. "Working for communities and with clients means understanding construction budgets, managing time constraints, navigating material limitations, and many more challenges, all the while trying to create meaningful and impactful work," says Robb. Brynna joined the team full-time two years ago after interning with Matthews | DCCM during her final two semesters at UNF. Describe your job in one sentence As a civil engineer, I design stormwater management facilities and lift stations. What's something you enjoy doing outside of work? I enjoy playing pickleball outside of work. Why did you want to become an engineer? When I was interning at a prosthetics office in college, I realized I was drawn to the design aspects of the field which is why I shifted my attention to engineering. There is something so cool about designing a product and seeing it constructed. Surprising or fun fact about yourself. I have trained two service dogs. Any advice for STEM students/future engineers? WHAT WOULD I DO, IF I Could Start My Structural Engineering Journey from SCRATCH ! Looking back on my path in structural engineering, I see many opportunities for improvement. Here are some key changes I would make to enhance my learning and development: 1. Combine Fundamentals with Software Learning: For projects like designing a portal frame, I would begin by sketching and analyzing the design by hand. Following that, I would use software tools to recreate the design. This method not only strengthens my grasp of the basics but also helps me effectively apply technology. 2. Emphasize Preparation: Taking inspiration from Abraham Lincoln, who said, "Give me six hours to chop down a tree, and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe," I would prioritize thorough preparation before lectures. By understanding the core structural elements beforehand, I could better manage the information shared by senior engineers without feeling overwhelmed. 3. Learn Through Teaching: I would actively share what I learn with my peers. Teaching others reinforces my own understanding and introduces me to different perspectives. Simplifying complex ideas for others helps solidify my knowledge. 4. Focus on Practical Experience I would dedicate time to learning how to read and create structural drawings while gaining insights into the construction process. Sketching my ideas would help me visualize solutions and improve communication with architects and builders. 5. Begin Internships Early: I would look for internships earlier in my career, especially in smaller firms. These experiences provide valuable lessons in problem-solving and project management. Working in smaller teams offers a more holistic view of projects and personalized mentorship. 6. Enhance Soft Skills: I would invest in developing my public speaking, sales, and marketing skills. These abilities are crucial for effectively presenting projects and attracting clients. My goal would be to make presentations as engaging as possible, similar to TED talks, rather than simply reading from slides. 7. Maintain Curiosity and Open-Mindedness I would explore various engineering disciplines. Interests can shift, as mine did from geotechnical to structural engineering.
