13 January 1942 – German U-Boats begin operations of the US East Coast. The move is called operation Paukenschlag (Drum Roll). Admiral Doenitz has faced arguments from his superiors in the German Navy who do not favor the operation, and he has had the difficulty that only the larger 740-ton U-Boats are really suitable for such long range patrols. When Doenitz gives the order for the attack to begin there are 11 U-Boats in position and 10 more en route. Together they sink more than 150,000 tons during the first month. Intelligence sources have given reasonable warning of the attack but the U-Boats find virtually peace-time conditions in operation. Ships sail with lights on at night; lighthouses and bouys are still lit; there is no radio discipline – merchant ships often give their positions in plain text; there are destroyer patrols (not convoys with escorts) but these are regular and predictable and their crews are naturally inexperienced. The Allied situation began to improve gradually. As the great wheels of American industry turned, a “60 vessels in 60 days” escort building program was proclaimed to overcome the shortfall in antisubmarine craft; 201 minesweepers that could be drafted to escort work were completed, and a subchaser training school was established in Miami. On 1 April, Admiral Andrews (Commander of the Eastern Sea Frontier) set up a “bucket brigade” system whereby lightly escorted convoys proceeded only by day, stopping for the night in protected anchorages. Meanwhile, antisubmarine aircraft, such as long-range Consolidated B-24 Liberator bombers and PBY Catalina seaplanes, were pressed into service. Finally, on 18 April, Andrews and Lt. Gen. Hugh A. Drum, feisty chief of the Army Eastern Defense Command, ordered a shoreline blackout and a dim-out of coastal cities. The U-boats were deprived of their sitting ducks, and ship losses along the Eastern Seaboard dropped to 23 that month. In July, there would be only three lost, and then none for the rest of the year. May brought another dramatic turnaround in Allied fortunes. With new construction and the release of destroyers and other escorts from the U.S. Atlantic Fleet, Admiral Andrews was able to organize the first strong offshore convoys, shepherded by more than 300 patrol planes based at 19 airfields. Dönitz started shifting his wolfpacks southward, and only six merchantmen were sunk along the East Coast that month. The maritime news has been quite rightly dominated by the MV Dali’s allision with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland which cost six lives and closed two major transport arteries on land and sea. It was therefore good to receive the first Safety Digest of 2024 from the UK’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch. This issue contains several analyses of accidents, some of them fatal, involving merchant, fishing and recreational vessels. In his introduction, the Chief Inspector of Marine Accidents Andrew Moll OBE, encouraged all seafarers to engage in ‘precautionary thought’. This process is intended to focus minds on the activity at hand, the risks involved and the equipment and training required. Or as we used to call it in the military, the Seven Ps: ‘Prior Planning & Preparation Prevents P*ss Poor Performance’. #maritime #boatchat #marinesurveying

🚨 Breaking News: Cargo Ship Catches Fire Off Goa Coast🚨 A major fire has broken out on the container cargo vessel MV Maersk Frankfurt off Betul in Goa. Tragically, one crew member has lost their life in this incident. The deceased has been identified as a seaman from the Philippines. The vessel, carrying 21 crew members from the Philippines, Montenegro, and Ukraine, was en route from Mundra port to Colombo, Sri Lanka. The fire reportedly started due to a short circuit and rapidly spread, causing explosions as containers burst. The Indian Navy and Coast Guard have responded swiftly, deploying ships and aircraft to combat the blaze and ensure the safety of the remaining crew members. Despite the crew's initial efforts to extinguish the fire, the situation escalated, leading to the involvement of the Indian Coast Guard, which has sent three ships equipped with firefighting gear and a helicopter for evacuation. The ship, carrying International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) cargo, remains ablaze with 20 out of 160 containers on fire. The Indian Navy's Western Naval Command and the Information Fusion Centre have also been notified and are coordinating efforts to manage the situation. Firefighting operations are ongoing, with additional assistance provided by an Emergency Towing Vessel from Mumbai Port. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those affected by this tragic incident. #amerkothari #mahavirlogistics #adinathenterptises #MaritimeSafety #IndianNavy #Goa #ShippingNews #CargoShipFire #CoastGuard #MaritimeDisaster #importexportcustomclearance #internationalfreightforwarding #EmergencyResponse #SafetyAtSea #Seafarers #IMDG

Sinking of dry bulk carrier Tutor highlights escalating Red Sea maritime threats The sinking of the #drybulk carrier Tutor marks the fourth seafarer death in the #RedSea since March and the second total loss of a vessel in this region since October 2023 amid #Houthi attacks. The Tutor, carrying #Russian #coal, was attacked using an Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV). Although carrying armed guards, they could not combat this kind of threat. This incident is expected to spike #insurance rates for Red Sea transits and, consequently, increase costs for charterers. The threat level remains high, highlighting the need for increased naval patrols and a negotiated settlement to ensure the safety of #shipping. #kpler

The U.S. State Department has made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Egypt of 28-Meter Patrol Craft Kits and related equipment for an estimated cost of $129 million. The Government of Egypt has requested to buy additional non-Major Defense Equipment (MDE) 28-meter patrol craft production kits and technical support. The kits consist of Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats, forward-looking infrared systems, and computer packages; technical and logistics support services; transportation; spare parts, materials, equipment, and components; and other related elements of logistical and program support. The proposed sale will improve Egypt’s capacity to sustain security operations and strengthen its internal and external defense capabilities. The proposed sale will assist the Government of Egypt’s maritime patrol and interdiction efforts to contribute to regional maritime security efforts in the Mediterranean and Red Sea. The principal contractor will be Swiftships, of Morgan City, LA. Egyptian Navy and Swiftships partnership features a benchmarkable co-production model and successful partnership. The relationship between parties started in the earlier nineties with delivery of two (2) 54m Missile Retrievers and grew to a massive scale serial Co-production of 28m Coast Patrol Craft (CPC). By combining FMS and DCS contracts, 49 CPCs to be produced by 2027, including built, under-construction and ordered. The scope of work included planning yard and sustainment site for Egyptian Navy in Alexandria to construct 28 meter Coast Patrol Craft (CPC28) using US procured material and in-country labor under Swiftships Subject Matter Expert (SME) support and QA guidelines from ABS. Swiftships BOT (Build, Operate & Transfer) approach secured complete Transferred of Technology (ToT) and Transfer of Production (ToP) to Egypt, along with a complete training program to manufacture and life-time support of ships for the Egyptian Navy (EN). This, over 40 years partnership is successfully progressing, and over 50 CPC28 are booked to be constructed until 2027. #military #defense #defence #militaryleak https://lnkd.in/g4VHMDCR

Search-and-rescue operations are still ongoing, a defense official told BI on Friday. Reports say the pair were boarding a vessel when one fell, The second SEAL jumped in after him as part of Navy SEAL protocol to help a comrade in danger, the report said, and they both vanished. The last official communication was that the water conditions were "very challenging" and that the SEALs were wearing heavy gear. The US military has launched a massive search-and-rescue operation involving multiple assets, including aircraft, ships, and divers. The official said that the operation is still ongoing, and that the US has not given up hope of finding the missing SEALs. No official statement has been made that provides any details on the nature or purpose of the operation that the SEALs were conducting. Navy SEALs are elite special forces who are trained to conduct covert missions in hostile environments. ABC News reported, a former U.S. official described nighttime boarding operations as some of the most complex and dangerous operations that Navy sailors can carry out and that ocean sea states and environmental considerations are constantly being monitored. https://lnkd.in/ea-hS2FC ByLuis Martinez January 14, 2024, 1:33 PM The incident is a reminder of the dangers and sacrifices that US service members face every day in their efforts to protect national security and global stability. #USNavySEALs #MissingInAction #HopeMatters #Somalia #SearchAndRescue #USMilitary #MSN #BusinessInsider #abcnews
