This morning we welcomed Zöe Franklin, the new MP for Guildford, to our Surrey depot to meet our staff and Friday volunteers. We talked about food waste and food insecurity in the region and shared the impact we are having from our new Guildford site. Do you have some hours to spare? We need more volunteers to help get food to people in need in Surrey. Find out more: https://lnkd.in/eN4bugat

The JAFSCD published "Toward a Justice Approach to Emergency Food Assistance and Food Waste: Exploring Pantry-Urban Gardener Partnerships in California's Santa Clara County," which Chris Bacon, Emma McCurry, Christopher McNeil, and I co-authored! In the article, we explore how food pantries and urban gardens could partner to transform pantries into distribution sites that also become food justice education and organizing spaces. Those moments when you don't really know how it will go! Thanks to City of Norwood Payneham and St Peters for including me in this year's Raising the bar event. Being able to speak about our humaning, perfectionism, expectations and have a creative exploration at The Colonist Tavern was a great way to spend a Tuesday night. Thanks to the Staff and Volunteers who generously gave their time and supported me with pipecleaners and balls everywhere!

My latest newspaper article. The basic premise is to what extent is an overreliance on volunteers in providing emergency food an abdication of state? https://lnkd.in/ev7hhwQE

𝙂𝙤𝙤𝙙 𝘽𝙪𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙒𝙚𝙚𝙠! No, it’s not a wish; it’s the actual name of the celebration going on this week 😅 Organised by the Good Business Charter, it's a moment to pause and reflect on what 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱 looks like. At the GBC, they summarised it in 10 components: ❥ Real Living Wage ❥ Fairer Hours and Contracts ❥ Employee Well-being ❥ Employee Representation ❥ Equality, Diversity & Inclusion ❥ Environmental Responsibility ❥ Pay Fair Tax ❥ Commitment to Customers ❥ Ethical Sourcing ❥ Prompt Payment As for me, being a responsible business owner is 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘺 to be. The minimum starting point for what I aspire to, for what I’d want to see everywhere in the world. And what better way to wish you a Good Business Week (yes, it's a wish this time! 🥂) than to share with you the most recent video of our charity of choice, FeedLondon, a project run by Miracles Charity. For our clients out there reading this, here’s to what our Christmas donations in lieu of gifts contributed to. These numbers really speak volumes: with the Christmas 2023 initiative, they... Assisted 𝟮𝟲𝟬 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘀, Supported 𝟲𝟬𝟬 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 (3,650 since launch) Delivered 𝟲,𝟮𝟰𝟬 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘀 (35,700 since launch) Distributed £𝟭𝟵,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗩𝗼𝘂𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 (£93,000 since launch) Check the link in the comments to read a bit more of what was achieved in total. Our contributions were just a drop in the ocean 💧, but it’s like responsible entrepreneurship: it's what we’d want to see everywhere in the world, and we can only start with our own little bit. So, what little thing can you commit to doing this week to give your own tiny drop in the ocean to promote responsible entrepreneurship? 💞 #GoodBusinessMatters #ethicalbusiness #responsiblebusiness

“Food is the basic necessities of life, right? Without it, how can you do anything else? And it's really important. Basic needs to get food on the table,” says Josh Kline, LOFT Community Services, Coordinator, Mount Dennis Food Bank. As the cost of living continues to rise 📈, the affordability issue impacts tenants' ability to purchase food. To help tackle this issue, Toronto Community Housing has partnered with tenants and community agencies by supporting food banks and food programs. Watch our first video of our food security food series to hear from TCHC employees, community partners and tenant leaders on how we respond to food insecurity in communities. President, CEO | Faith Hope and Love Community | FHL Academy | Visionary, Coach, Educator and Mobilizer of communities for transformation
Food pantries may distribute food, but their true purpose goes far beyond that—they exist for people. The greatest asset in any food pantry isn’t the food on the shelves, but the people who give their time, energy, and love to serve others. It’s through investing in these individuals—whether they are volunteers or those in need—that real transformation happens. When we pour into people, we build more than just sustenance; we build hope, trust, and a sense of community. The food may fill stomachs, but it’s the people who uplift spirits and change lives. By empowering those who serve and those who are served, we create a ripple effect of transformation that reaches far beyond a single meal. The true investment is in the human soul, and through that, we transform lives, one person at a time.
The heart of a food pantry isn’t just the food—it’s the people. The volunteers, the lifeblood behind every bags of groceries given, are what truly make the difference. The better the people serving, the better the impact we create. It’s not about counting how many bags of food are handed out (although we also count them); it’s about how many lives are changed. Our success is measured in the stories of hope, the dignity restored, and the communities strengthened. It’s people, not food, that fuel transformation. https://lnkd.in/gYKFdSyc

It’s fantastic what is goin on over in the US. They plan to be lead free by 2035, however it seems as in this post that they have hit a similar stumbling block as we have with the Sever Trent Water green recovery program in Coventry. Owners only need to get the Lead pipe replaced if they want to, which is understandable without knowing the facts and risks of lead exposure. If the government released more about the issue I am certain people would jump at the chance to replace their service pipe, protecting themselves and any future owners or tenants from Lead poisoning. #leadwaterpipe #leadreplacement #ServicePipe #WaterMain #watermainreplacement
Unleaded Kids, a nonprofit that strives to address major gaps in lead policy in the U.S., released a new blog, "Lead in Water: Critical Ambiguity in EPA’s Proposed Lead and Copper Rule". In it, Tom Neltner, National Director for Unleaded Kids, addresses ambiguity in EPA's proposed improvements to its Lead and Copper Rule (LCR) regarding whether the mandate to replace Lead Service Lines (LSLs) includes lines on private property and recommends changes to strengthen the language.
