Reflecting on a Journey: Embracing Optimism, Learning from Failures, and Valuing Connections
Recently, I was inspired by Mark Rober's commencement speech at MIT (https://lnkd.in/dmb6_FQE). His insights resonate deeply with my personal and professional journey, especially as I aspire to evolve beyond the realm of coding.
🌟 Embracing Naive Optimism: Rober's concept of "naive optimism" struck a chord with me. It's about stepping into challenges with a fresh, hopeful perspective, acknowledging that not knowing everything opens doors to innovative thinking and problem-solving. In my career, this approach has often been a guiding light – leading me to take risks and embrace opportunities that I might have otherwise overlooked.
💡 Learning from Failures: Rober highlighted the importance of framing failures as opportunities for growth. Each mistake, much like every bug in a code, is a lesson in disguise. This philosophy has been instrumental in my development as a professional. It's not about the setbacks, but how we bounce back from them, learn, and improve.
🤝 The Power of Relationships: The speech also emphasized the importance of nurturing relationships. In the tech world, it’s easy to get lost in lines of code and forget the human element. But it's the connections with others that truly drive innovation and change. My journey has been enriched by mentors, colleagues, and the community. They've not only supported my growth but also reminded me of the impact we can have when we work together.
🚀 Beyond Coding: As Rober seamlessly transitioned from engineering to content creation, it reminds me of my own aspirations. I don't just want to write code; I want to use my skills to contribute more meaningfully to the world. This speech was a reaffirmation of my belief that technology, coupled with creativity, ambition, and a deep understanding of human needs, can lead to extraordinary outcomes.
Mark Rober’s speech is a reminder that our journeys are not just about the technical skills we acquire but also about the mindset we cultivate and the relationships we build. As I continue my professional journey, I am more committed than ever to embracing optimism, learning from every experience, and fostering connections that transcend the ordinary.

I think I've missed my calling. You know when you do something that makes you feel as light as a feather, about to burst with energy and you just feel like you have found a space you fit into - well that is what the entire day was like for me yesterday.
This year I am lucky enough to have been invited to be a mentor / student support for the wonderful Delorean Project run by Rob Steffler at Glasshouse Christian College. I spent the majority of the day delivering 2 workshops to 2 separate groups on the topic of 'Marketing your Innovation'. Taking them through the process of working on a prototype, validating it, understand the target market, carrying out a competitor analysis, integrating their team mission and values into the core message, choosing the best marketing channels to speak to the target market with what works in the market in mind and what type of content works for which market.
It was a great day, working with the year 10's who are all bursting with brilliant (and I mean brilliant) ideas. (just you watch this space). I cannot wait for the next time we get together in 2 weeks to see the progress as we work towards the Shark Tank Pitch.
Then in the evening I delivered a similar presentation to the Mayors Telstra Innovation Award cohort, this year I have been invited to be one of the mentors with a team from Suncoast Christian College, these guys have a fabulous idea for a product that is absolutely commercially viable. Its great meeting the passionate teachers like Adam King who gather these kids and nurture their ideas at school to be ready to bring to awards like this one.
Another wonderful evening with these young, innovative, bright minds. Some of their ideas are ground breaking. I love seeing this kind of untapped potential in one room, its like being part of a boiling pot of "what ifs".
I probably should have listened to my younger self when I was a teenager and followed the pathway to being a CDT teacher.
Thanks to Rob Steffler and Tara Jacobsen from Study Sunshine Coast Australia for getting me involved in these programs, you have illuminated a pathway for me that I might just take a bit more seriously.
