A step forward for ocean protection: EU validates the High Seas Treaty 🌊 The #HighSeasTreaty, signed by the United Nations in June 2023, has recently received formal validation from the European Union, marking a significant advancement in global marine conservation. This landmark agreement aims to protect vast ocean areas beyond national jurisdictions, preserving marine biodiversity and ecosystems for future generations. The treaty addresses a critical gap in ocean governance, covering approximately 95% of the planet's ocean volume. It could represent a turning point in ocean conservation, offering a legal framework to address threats such as pollution, overfishing, and climate change in international waters. However, the path to global implementation remains long. To come into force, the treaty must be ratified by the national parliaments of at least 60 countries. The deadline for this ratification is set for June 2025, giving countries two years to complete their internal legislative processes. This timeline underscores the urgency of international action for #oceanprotection. While the EU's approval represents a significant step, the real challenge now lies in securing broad global support within the established deadline. 🖇 https://lnkd.in/dMDrRfdA
