Today is #WorldSuicidePreventionDay - which affects a range of communities including people living with FASD. Research from the US Dept of Health: "Findings suggest the need for health practitioners to be aware of the significant risk for suicidality in the FASD population, particularly in adolescent males, and to assess and treat this life threatening behaviour." I LOVE the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Epi Data Briefs that breakdown mental health prevalence by various social, economic, and environmental factors. Headlines below, but I strongly encourage you to take a deeper look at the brief. As a whole, about 1 in 10 NYC adults have depression (13%). This jumps to: 1 in 5 for NYC adults - aged 18-24 (20%) - experiencing food insecurity (20%) - who have asthma (20%) - who have two or more chronic health conditions (21%) 1 in 4 for NYC adults who - have above average financial stress (25%) - identify as bisexual (26%) - identify as multiracial (27%) - have ever experienced intimate partner violence (28%) Almost 2 in 5 for NYC adults who - identify as a gender other than cisgender (38%) - rate their overall health as fair or poor (39%) How do you or will you use this data? One way I use it: to demonstrate how the social drivers of health and access initiatives at United Way of New York City and the Department of Community Based Programs at Family Health Centers @ NYU Langone Health help address mental health. Kudos to Kinjia Hinterland and her team for presenting a wealth of data in an approachable, digestible format.
New Epi Data Brief describing depression among NYC adults. Cross sectional data from the NYC Health Department's Community Health Survey show that experiencing fincial stress and food insecurity are associated with a higher prevalence of depression. Associations with IPV, chronic conditions, and health behaviors are also detailed. Check out the report at https://lnkd.in/eFb9Bb3Y #NYCCommunityHealthSurvey #NYCCHS #NYCdepression #NYCdata

Today we’re sharing a resource that has been newly released, 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), from our friends at SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration). Conducted annually, the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) provides nationally representative data on the use of tobacco, alcohol, and drugs; substance use disorders; mental health issues; and receipt of substance use and mental health treatment among the civilian, noninstitutionalized population aged 12 or older in the United States. NSDUH estimates allow researchers, clinicians, policymakers, and the general public to better understand and improve the nation’s behavioral health. The 2022 NSDUH Highlighted Population Slides are a collection of slide decks underlining substance use and mental health for particular populations in the United States—including Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders. See the full report at https://lnkd.in/ggNBPBAg Did you know we have an extensive resource collection that includes this and many more available on our website? 🆕 findings published in NEJM Group and presented at #CPDD24: A The National Institutes of Health-funded intervention did not impact opioid-related overdose death rates over the evaluation period. Researchers identified the COVID-19 pandemic and an increasingly dangerous drug supply among factors that may have contributed to the diminished impact of the intervention. Despite facing unforeseen challenges, the #HEALingCommunities Study successfully engaged communities to select and implement hundreds of evidence-based strategies over the course of the intervention, demonstrating how leveraging community partnerships and using data to inform public health decisions can effectively support the uptake of evidence-based strategies at the local level. ❓ Did you know about the high rates of behavioral health challenges in rural areas? 🌾🧠 Assistant Professor Mike Drury co-authored an article on this topic, discussing the alarming shortage of available providers, with only 53% of nonmetropolitan counties in the US having access. To combat this issue, the authors explore implementing the Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders (UP) in rural primary care. 💊 START SMART then FOCUS💊 After holding a national workshop for the #AMS leads and prescribing clinicians from in-patient settings across all of #England in January 2024. I was pleased to be invited to speak at East of England Community Health Trusts, Mental Health Trusts and Health and Justice workshop today. It was a great chance to knowledge mobilise one of my key projects this year as a #CPhO Fellow at #UKHSA - Start Smart then Focus toolkit - updated 2023. The aim of this is to ensure prudent antimicrobial prescribing across in-patient settings in #England and thereby feeding into overarching aim of combatting antimicrobial resistance. As well as taking a behavioural science approach to implementation of this guideline in organisations and recognising barriers and enablers to implementation. #StartSmartThenFocus #AntimicrobialPrescribing #AntimicrobialStewardship #AntibioticGuardian #UKHSA #PublicHealth #ChiefPharmaceuticalOfficersClinicalFellow
