Our journey often begins with this question: "Why do you drink?" As written in Under The Influence - A Guide to the Myths and Realities of Alcoholism by James R. Milam, Ph.D., and Katherine Ketcham, my genes, enzymes, hormones, brain, and other body chemistries work together to create an abnormal and unfortunate reaction to alcohol. This is why I drank. I found that by going to a sobriety meeting I got a momentary sense of relief from the thirst brought about by my life's problems—those things I thought were making me drink. I realized that attending meetings made me feel good, so naturally, the more I went, the more often I felt good. When I wasn't in meetings I found relief from my obsession in flea market flipping, transforming the old to new. It became more than a hobby; it was a metaphor for my recovery. Every project was a success, not because of what it became, but because of what I became in the process. I recently came across an intriguing YouTube video by Professor Andrew Huberman (https://lnkd.in/gmsfCygT) that was a eye opener on motivation and impact of dopamine on our lives. It was a delightful blend of insightful, far from the usual complex jargon. only drawback; it is 2+ hours duration! trying to summarise here asmany may find it diffuclt to time! The podcast talks about role of dopamine, a chemical in our brain often associated with pleasure. However, as explained, its influence is much broader, touching upon areas like motivation, learning, memory, and even movement. This insight sheds new light on how our daily activities and achievements are connected to our brain's chemistry. What I found interesting was the discussion about natural ways to boost dopamine levels. Regular exercise and even something as simple as a cold shower can have a positive impact on our dopamine production. These are easy-to-implement strategies that can uplift our daily routine.
