Is digital innovation non-diverse - and is it important? This was the theme of today’s panel session at Danske Bank’s event Sustain Tomorrow. Some of the topics we looked at included: - Status of D&I in Nordic tech - Is it a problem if tech is non-diverse in recruitment? - If diversity is good for business, what do we need to do? - Quotas in tech: yay or nay? - Nordic values in tech In preparing for the session, here are a few of the key points that I wanted to emphasize: 🎯 We need to move the discussion from equality to equity. In societies where equality is a core societal value, it can seem strange to need to embrace equity but equality can only hold if we assume that everyone experiences all situations in the same and just way. But we don’t. So equity must be put on the table to level to playing field. 🎯 Who is behind tech? According to UNESCO, only 6% of professional software developers and 12% of AI researchers are women. Only 1.5% of venture capital in Denmark is invested in female founder led startups, even though these startups yield 25% higher ROI than businesses led by all male founders. 🎯 Why is hiring more diversely important? To answer this, we need to look at the evidence of what happens when we don’t…and we have plenty of evidence there. From facial recognition software that misidentifies darker skinned faces to be primates, to hiring algorithms that favour male candidates against women and non-European names, to a recent study at Oxford University in which only 22 of over 350 images generated by an AI image generator fulfilled the task to create images of Black doctors treating White kids. The rest were of White doctors treating Black kids. New technology like AI brings many opportunities for sure. However, there needs to be some checks and balances to block bias. What can be done? 👉🏽 We need to have more representative training data with humans-in-the-loop to catch bias. 👉🏽 We need to recruit programmers across multiple intersectional identities. 👉🏽 We need to decolonize technology and that includes paying more equitably when hiring content moderators in the global south and addressing the many pressing issues of child labour in cobolt mining. Are you a girl and do hearing about AI or any new tech term intimidates you? Then this one is exclusively for you. Apart from all the data which has been evidently showing the low graph of women participating in tech as compared to that of men, even in my experience whenever I ask a girl about programming, AI or any such computerized term their reaction is like it's something as hell of a difficult concept that can never be a cup of their tea. On the contrary boys even if not that familiar with the concept will try to react in a more confident way and try to understand and take interest in it. But the irony lies in the fact that the boolean number system which is the crucks of the programming language and the only language that computers do actually understand was discovered by a women herself Lady Augusta Ada Lovelace. In the present century being equipped with tech and AI is as important as financial independence if not more. We all know, Financial independence is the catalyst to women empowerment as somehow our society is structured in a way that when you have financial independence you have a say at the table and your words are counted. But to thrive in 21st century we need to get our tech skills on point too. The journey toward gender equality requires dismantling barriers and fostering environments where women can flourish. This International Women's Day, 2k24 @Curioverse has taken a small initiative to address this concern by introducing a program for young women. We will be conducting an online workshop for school and college girl students - Introduction to AI. It will be designed for beginners so if you are someone who has no idea and the concept of all these new tech booms intimidate you then it will be just the right match for you. In the ongoing conversations about MEI versus DEI, especially with Silicon Valley leaders recently sharing their views, I want to share my perspective: MEI sounds like a promising proposition to prioritize hiring based on skill set over race, gender, or disability. However, it's crucial to remember why DEI initiatives were established in the first place. DEI was created to address systemic injustices and provide equitable opportunities for underserved populations, thus leveling the playing field. Think of it this way: equality is giving everyone a shoe, but equity is giving everyone a shoe that fits. The tech industry remains male-dominated because STEM education and careers were historically offered to men while being largely inaccessible to women and minorities. DEI initiatives work to correct these long-standing disparities, ensuring that everyone has a fair chance to succeed based on their abilities. - What are your thoughts on this?
