Very few teams actually win trophies. So what’s in it for the rest? When you stop to think about it, the number of clubs that lift trophies regularly is quite small. In most countries, there are usually 2-3 teams that are used to winning, and the rest fight for a sporadic chance to do so. In a few particular settings, such as England or Brazil, there are 5-6 clubs capable of fighting for silverware, but even then, the ones that win the major trophies normally end up being the usual suspects. Thankfully, football goes way beyond this. In some senses, it is the least important part. Here are some things that matter just as much: - The connection between a club, its fanbase and city. Being a supporter means belonging to a community that has shared beliefs and history. In many ways, this is similar to religions. - The powerful feeling you get when watching your team alongside thousands of strangers that feel the same way you do. At home, you feel belonging and pride. Away from home, you feel like it’s us against the world. - Seeing a rising star come up through the youth ranks, to later shine in a national team and a top club, and feeling connected to him from the first minute of his career until the last. - Witnessing a historic moment or landmark that involves your team. It can be a great goal, a player reaching a milestone, or the retirement of a legend, for example. - Every club fights for something. Sometimes, your fight is for promotion. Sometimes, it is against relegation. It may even be participating in decisive matches where the other side is the one with something to gain. Either way, there is always an objective and a reason for fans to care. The most important thing though, is that every club is the protagonist of its own story. No matter what role your club plays, it will impact the story of a league, a player, or a moment. Football has so many facets, so this will always be the case. Totti might be the biggest idol of a fanbase in modern football, and he didn’t win all that much with AS Roma. Swedish fans will always remember Zlatan's bicycle kick against England… in a friendly! Santos Futebol Clube fans treasure Neymar’s moments of brilliance with them perhaps even more than the trophies he won. The list is endless, and that’s the beauty of it.

Today at Football Benchmark we have launched the 8th edition of our flagship "The European Champions Report", in which we focus on the domestic champions of Europe’s eight most prominent leagues in the 2022/23 season and, for the first time, on some selected peers. Among the key takeaways: 🥇 English champions Manchester City Football Club lead all champions in total operating #revenue (EUR 826m) but, expanding the perspective outside of the eight champions, Real Madrid C.F. outperformed them with EUR 830m, emerging as the global leader in world #football. 📈 FC Barcelona took the lead with record profits (+EUR 304m), propelled by extraordinary #transactions. There was a time when whether Man United or Real Madrid was the biggest football club in the world - not only in terms of domestic and European performance but also in terms of how their respective brands were perceived globally - was a credible debate. Not anymore! Real over the years has far exceeded not only other football clubs, but arguably all sporting clubs in the world vis-a-vis how it is perceived as a sporting brand, in terms of both recognition and reverence that has resulted in near-unmatched prestige. While Barca was dominating the domestic circuit last decade, Real made sure that they compensated for it in the Champions League, winning five out of the last ten attempts - three of them under the guidance of a club and global soccer legend - before reclaiming the domestic top gun's crown this decade so far. I absolutely did not support the proposal of the European Super League as a fan of the game, and that proposal was mainly being driven ahead relentlessly by Florentino Perez, arguably the most powerful man in European sports. It only shows how powerful Real under the leadership of Mr. Perez has become. Should one club be this powerful, though? May be not, but it seems there is not a single club in the world that can offer a sustained challenge to brand Real Madrid in terms of performance that lends ever-greater credibility to its influence. As a Man United fan, I wish the club I support was still a part of the debate in terms of dominance and influence both domestically and in Europe, but they will need to show serious improvement over the remaining years of this decade to stand a chance. With Jim Ratcliffe, another successful businessman with an increasingly visible footprint in sports now in charge of the club's football-related operations, that is a real possibility.

Addressing the Pitch Problems at Copa América: A Call for Better Organization As a professional football scout and performance analyst, I’ve always held a deep appreciation for the high standards set by North American sports organizations. However, the recent events surrounding the Copa América have brought to light a concerning issue that needs urgent attention: the quality of the playing fields. One notable instance is the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, where the playing field was replaced just four days before the start of the competition. The synthetic turf was swapped for natural grass without the necessary foresight and preparation. The result? A subpar playing surface that was embarrassingly evident during the inaugural match. It's widely recognized that North America excels in organizing sporting events, yet this situation has left much to be desired. World-class players should not have to compete on makeshift fields. With several major competitions on the horizon in the United States, it's crucial to address these issues promptly. For six months, it was known that the inaugural match of the Copa América would be held at this stadium. It is simply unacceptable for such oversights to occur. This post is intended as constructive criticism, not an attack on the organizers. The goal is to highlight areas for improvement to ensure that American football can stand toe-to-toe with European counterparts in such prestigious tournaments. Matchday revenues played a key role in this remarkable improvement, with the eight champions collectively recording stadium income exceeding EUR 660m. 🔝 Manchester City Football Club lead the group of champions in total operating revenue (EUR 826m) but, expanding the perspective outside of the eight champions, Real Madrid CF are the global leader (EUR 830m). ▶ FC Barcelona recorded the highest staff cost #growth (+39% year-on-year to EUR 639m).
