Subdivisions and VicRoads
This week we are sharing an interesting insight into obtaining statement of compliance for a subdivision project which required a new road construction as conditioned by VicRoads on a planning permit.
The development required a new road intersection upgrade which involved many different surveying aspects, including drone footage of the as-built intersection prior to the final compliance being issued.
It is common for VicRoads to request as-built information for any works required within their road reserve relating to a subdivision project, so it is important to understand their requirements and plan to capture this data ahead of time to ensure a fast conclusion to any outstanding permit conditions.
We are seeing more and more that the subdivision process is expanding to include asset recording and other works-as-executed information by relevant authorities, so it pays to have all tools at your disposal to capture this information.

Cruising redefined by setting sails : Chapter 6, the ship hull reveals a sandwich construction. Air chambers, which serve to accommodate the sail device, are arranged in one of two configurations: either in a single row coaxially with the longitudinal axis of the ship, or in two rows parallel to said axis. In the case of a two-row arrangement, a longitudinal spacing and a starboard and port transverse spacing to the longitudinal axis is provided in each case. This allows for the formation of air chambers with an offset to each other, which can be used to create a central vertical rescue space for passengers and crew, extending along the longitudinal axis from the lower deck to the main deck. A central vertical rescue space for passengers and crew is formed amidships on cruise ships, extending along the longitudinal axis from the lower deck to the main deck. This space can be closed watertight by an armoured glazed hatch on the main deck. The invention achieves increased bending, shear and torsional rigidity of the hull through the use of a honeycomb structure in sandwich construction, which is effective in both the longitudinal and transverse directions of the ship. The air chambers and the rescue compartments are situated between the lowest deck and the main deck, with the rescue compartments extending in at least one row along the longitudinal axis of the ship, and comprising a number of bulkhead decks corresponding to the number of decks. The longitudinally extending bulkhead walls are connected on at least one side to the decks and to the longitudinal and transverse frames. Each wall forms a longitudinal beam of the hull as truss or frame plates. The transversely arranged bulkhead walls of the air chambers are connected to the bulkhead decks of the rescue compartments and to the fire compartments. Each wall forms a transverse beam of the hull as truss or frame plates. The sandwich construction method according to the invention is always realised when the longitudinal and transverse beams of the hull, in conjunction with the underwater hull as the lower chord and with the main deck as the upper chord, form a load-bearing system of the hull that is resistant to bending, shear and torsion and acts in two directions.

Safe System Snippet - Seagull Intersections
While seagull intersections can reduce traffic delays through their staged right-turn movements, their implementation has not always translated to improved safety outcomes. Studies have revealed increased crash rates at some seagull intersections. This can be attributed to two primary factors: compromised geometric design and inherent operational complexity.
Design issues include inadequate merge lane lengths, insufficient sightlines, or poorly defined turning areas. These can force drivers to execute challenging manoeuvres under time pressure, leading to increased collision risk. Additionally, the inherent complexity of the seagull layout, with its unique turning patterns and staggered traffic flows, can be cognitively demanding for unfamiliar drivers. This cognitive overload can contribute to confusion and misjudgement.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi has developed a dedicated crash prediction tool for seagull intersections. This model quantifies the safety implications of various design elements, enabling engineers to optimise layouts.
