🌍 Happy Earth Day! Today is a great day to highlight the vital connection between conservation and philanthropy. As the Old Dominion University Office of Advancement, we view environmental stewardship as a key form of giving back—a philanthropic act that benefits not only our planet but every individual it sustains. 🌿 Conservation efforts, from energy-saving initiatives to recycling programs, are philanthropic investments in the health and longevity of our environment. They reflect our commitment to responsible stewardship and the well-being of future generations. As professionals and leaders, it is imperative to recognize that sustainable practices in our daily operations and academic endeavors are not just good policy—they are acts of generosity toward the world we all share. Let’s continue to embrace this broader definition of philanthropy, where every action to conserve is an act of giving. 🦁💙

🌱✨ Sustainable Seattle! 🌱✨ As a board member, I am excited to share our participation in the GiveBIG campaign by wagives - a Washington state online giving platform campaign. I, along with other board members, are donating up to $2,500 to match if S2 receives more than 25 donations. Who We Are: S2 is a grassroot non profit: Our team and board leadership, along with program participants, represent those most impacted by environmental & economic injustices. As frontline leaders, we address issues like housing insecurity, food scarcity, climate & energy risk, and lack of healthcare access. What We Do: Our work is focused on three key program areas: Interweave: An interdisciplinary sustainability accelerator supporting frontline-led projects with fiscal sponsorship, technical assistance, and capacity building. Since 2020, we've returned $3.1M to the community through this program, supporting 18 projects with 8 more in the pipeline, 94% of which are QTBIPOC or BIPOC-led. Soil Health and Justice Initiative (SHJI): Building community understanding and grassroots advocacy to strengthen sustainability efforts. Just Circular Communities Initiative (JCC): Collaborating on circular economy frameworks to reduce waste, regenerate ecosystems, prevent displacement, and build resilience in frontline neighborhoods. Your Support Matters: As a community oriented grassroot organization, a good portion of our funding relies on crowdsource efforts. April is the month to celebrate our planet and take action to protect it. However, I fully recognize that getting to care for and talk about environmental sustainability issues is a privilege for those who have economic sustainability. Knowing this privilege, FRG uses its resources and power in the community to carry out initiatives like donating meals to those in need to combat food insecurity, partnering with local organizations like BREADCOIN, partnering with DC public schools to host culinary interns to further their careers in a discipline they love, and more. For us, sustainability is a year-round and all-encompassing effort. #sustainability #earthmonth #economicsustainability #environmentalsustainability

Yesterday’s Sustainable Building Week event, Amplifying Black Vision In The Sustainable Building Industry left me BUZZING with excitement for the upcoming Built Oregon Festival in partnership with Cultivate Bend next week! These events are thought leadership incubators and offer opportunities for us to roll together and exchange ideas in real life! The Warm Springs conversation for the festival is a prime example of how dope change IS! And how boundless human collaboration and ingenuity are. What I heard at the thought leadership event yesterday from powerful voices like Chandra D. Robinson deeply resonates with the dialogue in Warm Springs, and reaffirmed our undeniable connections to one another. I am SOOOOOO incredibly charged by the juicy nature of real-time dialogues, whether I’m hosting them, talking to a homie, or if im in the audience listening. Conversations about the world around us ground me in the joys of exploration, sharing, and learning. Some facts this #EarthDay: ➡️ Despite the data making clear that BIPOC communities are hit hardest by climate change and pollution, only 1.3% of philanthropic dollars in the US go to environmental justice–focused organizations with leaders from impacted communities.  ➡️ BIWOC-led environmental justice organizations are on the frontlines of the climate crisis and finding innovative solutions—yet 70-80% of philanthropic funding goes to organizations run by men. The Women’s Environmental Leadership Fund (WE LEAD) is a Tides Foundation environmental grantmaking initiative that elevates and invests in women and nonbinary leaders who are addressing the root causes of the climate crisis in communities of color, which are disproportionately impacted. To mark Earth Day, we're proud to release WE LEAD's new analysis of the environmental grantmaking landscape for BIWOC-led environmental justice organizations. In it, we make the case for deeper investment in the sustainability of proximate leaders, including women of color, and their organizations, not merely because it’s the just thing to do, but because they are making progress on the climate challenge.
