"Thousands of Victorian students are returning to school on Tuesday without a permanent classroom teacher or subject teacher due to staffing shortages that are biting nationwide. For many, it will mean a revolving door of relief teachers, cancelled subjects or being split up and placed with other classes, which research shows will have negative effects on their learning. I would like to take a moment to the importance of Mentors and Tutors for our Prison to Professionals program. P2P provides many individuals with second-chance opportunities. Amongst the many challenges of reentry are issues such as obtaining housing, finding a job, and reconnecting with family, we work our best on counseling, aid, and encouragement, but we can't do it all by ourselves. We need Tutors and Mentors to help these individuals grow. Tutors will provide non-classroom academic instruction to scholars for proactive or remedial purposes. When I worked on this dataset, I was surprised by the rise in departure in Asheville City schools. However, I remembered that, in NC, data is offset when reported, and much of the attrition we are seeing in teachers from COVID has just recently been reported. While I was able to aggregate data to make this heatmap in #Tableau, there is even more data sourced in the State of the Teaching Profession dashboard from DPI: https://lnkd.in/e-krgbrx
Teacher departure rates (the percentage of teachers who leave teaching in North Carolina or change districts) in K-12 traditional public school districts for the 2022-23 school year ranged from 6% in Camden County Schools to 31% in Asheville City Schools. #NCEd
