“Education policy has not been helped by the fact that the Conservatives have burned through six secretaries of state in three years. After less than 18 months in post, Gillian Keegan looks like an old hand. But with 79% of secondary schools and 37% of primaries in England now run as academies, the issue of governance has not gone away. The excessive pay of some trust executives and poor outcomes of some chains, as well as tensions over funding, require policymakers’ focused attention. Inexplicably, Conservative ministers refused Ofsted’s request to inspect trusts as well as schools. Labour has made this its policy. But it will take more than a few visits from inspectors to sort out the unaddressed problems of the academisation experiment.” #education #policy #academisation #impact #governance

Great piece in the The Economist on England's school reforms since 2010. England is improving on international benchmark tests whereas other countries are falling behind, because it: 1. Pushed the use of systematic synthetic phonics to teach children to read 2. Increased the difficulty, and got very specific with the factual content, of curriculums 3. Maintained high accountability via high stakes exams 4. Gave schools & teachers autonomy to reach these goals Other countries' (particularly Scotland, which has done very badly) downplayed knowledge, and played up teaching generic skills. https://lnkd.in/ew76C_iu

This single statistic could be fundamental in how the new Labour government makes its decisions 👇 92% of the cabinet attended comprehensive schools compared to just 19% in the previous Conservative cabinet. This is important as only around 6% of UK children attend a private school, so it makes sense for our government to reflect the majority experience, the everyday lived experience of its citizens. Responding to a new report from the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) calling for a rethink of Welsh education policy, NAHT Cymru said: Schools in Wales are working hard to deliver for their pupils, but this dedication hasn’t been matched by the investment needed, especially on the back of the pandemic and cost of living crisis. While we support the renewed focus from the Welsh Government on numeracy and literacy, schools do not have the time or funding to deliver this in the way they would like to. School leaders are facing impossible challenges in making budgets add up, with some having to make teachers and teaching assistants redundant when they actually want to recruit more staff to help those pupils with the greatest needs. The thing that would make the biggest positive difference for pupils right now would be a pause on unnecessary reforms like changes to the school day, and a concerted effort to increase support for schools so they can ensure all children get the education they deserve. While international comparisons can be useful, different nations will be at different stages of education policy development, and while we can learn from them we should not over-interpret them. The pupils who took these PISA tests in 2022 have not benefited from the new Curriculum for Wales. https://lnkd.in/e6XaYg-e

The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) has released a report suggesting a delay in the planned GCSE reforms to ensure the changes meaningfully address gaps in student outcomes... Should we be concerned about the achievement gap in Wales, where disadvantaged students lag behind their peers? How will the new GCSEs bridge the gap? Wales' PISA scores doesn't help the situation either.
