Sustainable business - how can both aspects be reconciled in the best possible way? Many companies from and around Rheine addressed this topic at the EWG's Sustainable Economy Service Desk event on 13 March 2024, and we were also represented by colleagues from our Corporate Responsibility department (Katharina Garza and Annabel Moeken) and Rainer Lüttmann. The event gave us the opportunity to discuss our measures to date on the road to energy transition and a sustainable economy with others from the region and to gain further inspiration. The presentation by Prof Dr Volker Quaschning, Professor of Renewable Energy Systems, made it clear once again why ambitious climate protection must be tackled now and that this is also an opportunity for the local economy. Many thanks to EWG Entwicklungs- und Wirtschaftsförderungsgesellschaft für Rheine mbH for this great opportunity to exchange ideas on such an important topic. I recently connected with Euro Sun Mining. Euro Sun Mining is developing a gold and #copper mine project in Romania that has the potential to contribute to the EU's resilience in strategic raw materials value chains. Copper is THE strategic material of the #energytransition. The industry must develop more copper mining, refining and recycling capacity in Europe and abroad. Euro Sun Mining is keen to contribute. I'm looking forward to the success of their project! ICA is working with its members and policymakers to create the right conditions for such investments. Shaping the Future of Carbon Capture: Policy Insights and Strategic Directions at CO₂ Value Days The second day started with presentations by EU Environment and Climate’s Policy Officer Fabien Ramos followed by our Secretary General Anastasios Perimenis and Policy Director Tudy Bernier on Carbon Capture and Utilisation (#CCU) in the current policy framework. Fabien Ramos mentioned that the European Commission is aware of the fact that CCU "is a very dynamic and growing sector" with around "150 CCU projects running in Europe." This sector therefore needs adequate policy moving forward and "the Clean Industrial Deal could be the place to better recognise what CCU can bring to Europe and what can be done at this level." This session took stock of the current developments of CCU in Europe from a multi-angle approach and discussed its future deployments. This included updates from a policy perspective, especially in light of recent developments (e.g. #NZIA, EU 2040 climate target, and the Industrial Carbon Management Strategy). Later in the day, discussions on CO₂ Value Europe’s future strategies will take place and the event will conclude with a general assembly where our new board members will be elected.
