Corporate Clues P002 - The debate between Doing Work Practically v/s Showing off Work is a prominent topic that continues to spark discussions, especially in the corporate sector! My perspective - Focusing on doing the work effectively & honestly will naturally demonstrate its outcomes/impact. Parallelly, being able to present your work when required is essential. However, practice of only showcasing work without the substance of practical implementation is unsustainable and unlikely to yield long-term benefits. #corporatetruth #personalviews #officeculture #cybersecurityconsulting

Last weekend, my husband and I went axe throwing with some friends. Let me just say, I was not great at it. 😅 Out of all the throws in our two-hour session, only a handful hit the board. And when they did, the group cheered like I’d just won an Olympic medal (and agreed not to leave me behind in the zombie apocalypse). It would’ve been easy to get frustrated. And I did, a little! But here’s what I realized: When I stopped focusing on hitting the bullseye every time and started focusing on my form, how I stood, how I gripped the axe, how I released—it started to click. The more I practiced, the better my aim became. And isn’t that how workplace investigations work, too? It’s not about being perfect from the start. It’s about having the right tools, building a process, and refining your approach over time. Here’s how you can apply the same mindset to investigations: ✅ Start with the basics. Just like my stance and grip were key to hitting the board, having a clear scope and plan sets the stage for any successful investigation. ✅ Focus on the process. Rushing to get results, whether it’s a bullseye or a quick resolution—leads to mistakes. A step-by-step approach ensures you're fair and thorough. ✅ Learn and adjust as you go. Every investigation is a chance to refine your skills. What worked? What didn’t? Reflecting on your process helps you improve for the next case. By the end of the axe-throwing session, I wasn’t hitting bullseyes, but I was hitting the board more often, and I’ll take that progress! Workplace investigations are the same. You don’t need to be perfect. You just need the right tools and a commitment to getting better with each case. 📥 Want to strengthen your process? The speak-up gap is real. Almost every employee would want to speak out when they see misconduct. But the reality is half never do, mainly because they're afraid of workplace retaliation and/or they're convinced no corrective action will be taken. Closing this gap is probably the most important thing companies can do to reduce workplace misconduct.
Will your employees report misconduct if they witness it? In our 2024 Ethical Culture Report, we found that only 50% of employees who witness misconduct actually report. “How do I assess credibility in a workplace investigation?” It’s one of the most frequent questions I get. And let’s be honest, credibility assessments can feel tricky. Witnesses are nervous. Stories conflict. And relying on a “gut feeling” won’t cut it. So, how do you approach credibility with confidence? Here’s what I recommend: 👉 Look for consistency. Does the witness’s story align with their prior statements or supporting evidence? 👉 Consider plausibility. Does what they’re saying make sense given the facts and circumstances? 👉 Evaluate their access to information. Would the witness realistically know the details they’re sharing? 👉 Watch for bias. Could the witness have a motive to influence the investigation one way or another? Credibility isn’t about “intuition.” It’s about carefully analyzing the facts and details you’re presented with. I share practical tips like this every week in my newsletter to help you navigate investigations with clarity and confidence. Want strategies like these delivered straight to your inbox?
