Despite having SIX months to fill the first Postal Police Basic Training class in nearly a year, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service somehow left two seats empty. This, despite the fact that the Postal Police Force is severely below authorized complement--currently operating at approximately 55% of their full, authorized and budgeted complement. This, despite the fact that the PPO attrition rate has been exceeding the hiring rate for DECADES. Postal police officer numbers are at their lowest point since the inception of the force in 1971. Postal police officers working at just over 50% of their authorized complement affects officer safety (little if any back-up is ever available, when needed); affects quality of life (forced overtime; unapproved leave, etc.) and erodes morale. But the U.S. Postal Inspection Service doesn't care--postal police officers working at 55% of authorized complement are 80% black and brown. Meanwhile, mostly white postal inspectors are working at 89% of their authorized complement, and every seat in their basic training classes are filled. And mail theft continues to get worse. I wonder how many postal inspectors are going to be deployed to Augusta, Georgia to protect the mail at the Masters Golf Tournament this spring? The over/under is 30. So far this century, the number of people working for the federal government and all its various agencies OTHER THAN for the U.S. Postal Service, has increased by 532,400 or 28.61%. The number of federal government employees has been growing at a rate faster than the overall average increase across all other industry sectors. The only way workers can have effective voice is through a democratic trade union that bargains with their employer. There is no substitute. The promotion of alternatives to the fundamental rights to organize and bargain through representatives of workers’ own choice is a mistaken and harmful endeavor. NGOs like the CIW and the WRC are not worker-governed, democratic organizations, no matter what good intentions they may have, or what good works they may do. “Worker-driven social responsibility” that does not result in union recognition and collective bargaining undermines efforts to form strong trade unions, as can be clearly seen in the CIW’s impact on farm worker organizing in Florida, North Carolina and elsewhere. Enforceable brand agreements are good when they are negotiated and enforced by worker-governed trade unions, and not otherwise. Ask farm worker union organizations what they think, or garment worker unions that have seen NGOs negotiate agreements without their participation.

Today is #NationalPostalWorkersDay, a celebration of the job they do to deliver the mail. Postal workers provide a vital service, especially during big election years like 2024 and in states like Oregon where elections are conducted completely by mail. Daniel Cortez, Oregon legislative and political director for the American Postal Workers Union, noted the critical role his colleagues play. "Whether it be America's election mail or letters from grandparents, care packages to our service members overseas, vital prescriptions for our seniors and veterans," Cortez outlined. "It's important to remember that all of that happens because of the dedication of the postal workers day in and day out." The United States Postal Service was established by Benjamin Franklin on July 26, 1775. The Postal Service is currently experiencing a shake-up. Trump-appointed Postmaster General Louis DeJoy is implementing his 10-year Delivering For America plan to modernize the Postal Service's network. It is meant job eliminations and sorting center cuts Cortez argued have hurt mail delivery. For instance, he pointed out sorting in Oregon has been consolidated to one center in Portland. "It's imperative that the American people know that this slowdown is manufactured by the Postal Service," Cortez contended. "Everything from failure to properly staff offices to just deliberately slowing down how fast mail moves." DeJoy has remained in office under President Joe Biden because only the Postal Board of Governors can oust him. Biden has delayed nominations for the board, delaying any potential change in leadership at the Postal Service.
