However, it deeply saddens me to acknowledge that black and brown communities are still underrepresented and often overlooked in these crucial conversations. Diversity in clinical trials is not just a goal; it's a necessity. Grateful to the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) (NICHD) for their continued support, and this grant to advance the clinical development of our novel intravaginal ring, DARE-PTB1. At Daré, we’re committed to addressing persistent unmet needs in women’s health and preterm birth is a large category that could benefit from new treatment options to protect women and babies - the World Health Organization estimates that globally, 13.4 million babies were born preterm in 2020 (before 37 weeks of gestation) and that complications from preterm birth are the leading cause of death among children under 5 years of age. Deeply honored to be partnered with this amazing group from University of St Andrews, The University of Edinburgh, NHS Fife, NHS Highland and so many others on highly significant work managing acute unscheduled and end-of-life care. 🔍 The project emerged amid unprecedented pressure on the country’s unscheduled care services, driven by workforce shortages, demographic changes, and widespread multimorbidity (when a person has two or more long-term health conditions). In 2022, Accident & Emergency waiting times hit record levels, and over a quarter-million calls to NHS24 went unanswered. Alongside these services, unscheduled care also includes General Practice Out-of-Hours (GPOOH) and the Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS). 🩺 Research shows that one group frequently using these services is individuals in their last year of life. Although essential, unscheduled care often isn’t the most appropriate option for them, relying on a reactive approach rather than nuanced, anticipatory, and coordinated planning. This can lead to fragmented, expensive, and less effective care, causing additional distress to patients and their families. 💡 Our program will leverage machine learning and artificial intelligence to analyze existing healthcare data and predict future patterns of unscheduled care use by patients in their last year of life. We recently added a new company to our health portfolio with an investment in Zócalo Health. Zócalo is a digital healthcare platform that provides Latinos with culturally competent and community-oriented care. Nearly 1-in-5 Latinos are uninsured and 58% say they prefer a Spanish speaking doctor. Co-founders Erik Cardenas and Mariza H. started Zócalo to give the Latino community simpler access to healthcare. The start-up provides patients access to primary care, behavioral health, social services, care coordination, complex care management, and urgent care. The company uses community health workers to engage and build trust with Latino patients and help Medicaid payors—31.4% of Medicaid beneficiaries nationwide identify as Hispanic—better serve a large and underserved demographic. UHN in Toronto moved from 4th to 3rd best hospital in the world, just behind #Mayoclinic and #clevelandclinic. What an amazing achievement… There are many insights that come to mind at the moment, but would like to share just one, which fills me with hope: I’ve been lucky enough to have worked for almost 10 years at 2 of the top 3 hospitals in the world (Mayo and UHN). Completely different organizations, mindset, processes, social/national circumstances, etc. Just completely different in almost any way. But both capable of achieving excellence at the highest level. Never think excellence is impossible! A Bit Off Topic, But Important... I recently read with great concern that Governor DeSantis of Florida has vetoed all grants for the arts. One of the reasons cited is that not all Floridians participate in or visit arts events, implying that funding for the arts is unnecessary. This line of reasoning is troubling for several reasons. If we extend this logic to other areas, where does it stop? By the same rationale, should we eliminate Medicaid because not everyone needs medical assistance? What about getting rid of all medical support programs? After all, significant health issues don't affect everyone directly, so why should public funds be used for healthcare at all? And what about education? I'm older now, and my children no longer attend public schools. Does that mean funding for education should be cut as well? The argument that funding should only be allocated to services and programs directly used by every single individual is fundamentally flawed. The arts, healthcare, and education are essential pillars of a thriving society. They contribute to the cultural, physical, and intellectual well-being of the community. Cutting funding in these areas not only undermines the quality of life for many but also diminishes the collective benefits we all enjoy from living in a well-rounded and supportive society. The arts, in particular, foster creativity, critical thinking, and cultural awareness. They provide a platform for diverse voices and perspectives, enriching our community and enhancing our shared humanity. Healthcare ensures that everyone has access to medical support when needed, promoting public health and safety. Education is the foundation of our future, equipping the next generation with the knowledge and skills to succeed. It is crucial to recognize that the value of these programs extends beyond individual use. They are investments in the community as a whole, supporting a more vibrant, healthy, and educated society. Rather than cutting funding, we should be advocating for increased support to ensure these essential services can continue to benefit all Floridians, directly or indirectly.
