The Brahmaputra River is swelling, affecting over 16 lakh people across 29 districts of Assam, with Jorhat among the worst-hit areas. Villages along the riverbanks are submerged, forcing residents to seek refuge on higher ground, often on roadsides, alongside their livestock. Many have set up makeshift shelters, enduring hardships with limited access to food and amenities. Schools in the region remain closed due to the floods, disrupting normal life for communities already grappling with the annual monsoon inundation. Despite these challenges, local residents remain resilient, emphasizing the need for proactive measures from authorities to mitigate the impact of such recurring disasters. On 5th May 2024 around 1:30 PM, Manipur experienced a severe hailstorm all over the state that lasted for 15 minutes and resulted in significant extensive damage to houses, property, infrastructure, and crops, killing of birds, injuries to animals and even uprooted trees in the Imphal valley. The hailstorm was so intense that it left parts of the valley covered with 4-5 inches of hail and led to urban flooding in some parts of Manipur. Affected districts include Bishnupur, Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi, Noney, Jiribam, and Pherzwal in Manipur and Cachar district in Assam. If you have a roof over your head, and you and your family had two full meals in a day, be grateful and help those who are in need. Lakhs of people, some of the poorest in the country, have been displaced due to massive floods in Bihar. Their houses are either inundated or filled with muck and sand. Stored grains have been washed away. People, including newborn babies, are living on higher grounds, embankments, roads, under a plastic sheet. Kharif (monsoon) crops have been washed away and if the floodwater does not drain out in time, rabi (winter) crops will be affected too. These poor communities of north Bihar are caught in a deadly trap of floods, droughts and official apathy and zero accountability. #bihar #biharfloods #floods #disasters #climatecrisis #poverty #climatejustice
