Give the community a reason to visit your retail space, other than to buy. Offering coffee or tea doesn't cost much and brings locals in more frequently. Revolving art from local artists is a great draw and gets the community wanting to see new displays. Finally, hosting free events is the number one thing you can do to get people in the door and returning frequently. Host a run, local movie night, or art show to get people in the door. From Customers to Friends - How Local Brands Craft Community Ever walked into a place where they greet you by name and your favorite order is ready before you even ask? That's the magic of local brands. 🌟 This is where every visit becomes more than a transaction; it's a warm, personal exchange. It's about those little moments that transform our day - a familiar smile, a chat about the weather, or a recommendation tailored just for you. Local brands weave the fabric of our community, turning ordinary places into spaces where we're not just customers, but cherished guests, even friends. They remind us that behind every product, every service, there's a story, a face, a heart. So next time you choose where to shop or dine, think local. By choosing them, we're not just enjoying quality and authenticity; we're nurturing the connections that make our neighborhood a community. Let's cherish and support our local brands. What would you do without any direction from a creative brief or a client? Just two weeks ago, we encountered this nook on the third level of Peace Centre and wondered what a truly original TMMW experience would be in a space like that. We were late to the Peace Centre party. Through months of community building efforts, PlayPan - Play For Good has invited artists, thrift shops and creative ventures of all shapes to transform the abandoned mall into a vibrant community. Thankfully, we were not too late and PlayPan gave us their blessings to make something out of this nook in Peace Centre's final two weeks. A few things intrigued us about the nook – the graffiti of the person(?) holding onto a heart, the location of the space being in a somewhat obscure part of an 'abandoned' building and the seedy reputation of Peace Centre as a 'KTV Capital'. Putting it all together, we thought this might just be the perfect spot for passersby to pour their hearts out. Inspired by the visual language of KTV lounges, we set out creating Secrets I'll Never Say, a confession nook for people to share their dirtiest little secrets. We didn't know if anyone would actually show up but were glad to see the booths and walls swarmed with secrets when we popped by over the weekend. Secrets I'll Never Say showed us the power of taking initiative, making meaning and creating experiences within untapped spaces. With this in mind, we are taking on 2024 with an eye for opportunities to make more original experiences happen. *One more thing: Secrets I'll Never Say will be around for just one more weekend. Do pop-by if you are curious!

🔖 How To Make Your Next Event Your Best One Yet Let’s face it—the in-store event is not what it used to be. Blame it on a challenging economy, the season, or even the pandemic, but for many tobacconists, executing a successful event is easier said than done. Despite the challenges, it’s not all bad news for those looking to level up their next big event. For smaller retailers, hosting an event with a more prominent manufacturer may not be economically possible because the required buy-in prices are too high. This doesn’t mean you can’t put on a great event; it just means you may need to get a bit more creative with your approach. Imagine this: a hidden Christmas bar in the heart of London, accessible only through a secret door…in August! 🎄 It's so popular they've just extended their opening from two weeks to three due to overwhelming demand. This past weekend, Hit Play sent me to the International Entertainment Buyers Association (IEBA) conference in Nashville, and it was fun to be a small fish surrounded by larger, wiser, and more experienced fish. 🐠 Some takeaways: 👉🏼 In 2025, audiences will continue to be much more selective with their dollars when it comes to events. This doesn’t just mean bringing the right acts to the right venues; it also means paying attention to every detail, from the ticket-buying experience to the moment they leave the venue. Investing in these small details (like quality AV, hey!) will not only enhance the overall experience but also encourage attendees to talk about the event, share it on social media, and ultimately return to your venue. 👉🏼 When entering a space, instead of only asking, "how can I get what I need out of this?" ask, "how can I connect with someone with no agenda?" You could be the one to recognize a professional need and link them to someone who can help. You could also just be the one to recognize a human need for a friendly face and an honest conversation to ask, "what level is your social battery on after 3 days of this?" 👉🏼 As a new friend at a breakfast table told me, "Most of us fell ass-backwards into what we're doing now." The cool part is that so many people I spoke with considered their current job to be their dream job. The lesson: if life presents it, don't stress about taking the scenic route. You may very well still end up where you want to be.
