Steve Jobs once said, “Design is not just what it looks and feels like, design is how it works.” This quote emphasizes that design is far more than aesthetics; it's about functionality and user experience. While many associate design with the visual aspects of objects—like the sleek lines of a smartphone or the color scheme of a website—true design goes much deeper. It encompasses how things operate, interact, and solve problems. Design is all around us. From the way your kitchen is organized, to the layout of your local grocery store, to the way streets are structured in your city, design touches all aspects of life. It shapes our experiences, influences how we interact with products, and has the power to either enhance or frustrate our day-to-day tasks. When a product is well-designed, it works seamlessly with our needs, often without us even realizing the thought and effort that went into making it intuitive and efficient. Good design emerges from a deep understanding of human needs and behaviors. Designers, whether they’re creating furniture, software, or services, must empathize with users to anticipate their desires, challenges, and goals. This empathy allows designers to solve problems in creative ways that make people's lives easier and more enjoyable. At its core, design isn’t just about crafting objects that are pleasing to the eye. It’s about creating solutions that function smoothly in the context of human interaction. My Journey into Service Design This is my first post on LinkedIn, and I want to share the story of how I came to service design. Some of you here may wonder, what is service design? I usually start by explaining that it's an approach focused on redesigning the customer experience to center around the needs of users—be they customers, employees, or local residents—through empathy, analysis, and problem-solving. While concepts like design thinking and customer experience are more familiar, real-world examples help deepen our understanding. Take the supermarket, for instance. Some customers often struggle to read small print on product labels because they've forgotten their glasses. By adding magnifying glasses on strings, we addressed this issue, enhancing their shopping experience. Similarly, for customers who find it difficult to reach high shelves, a solution was found by reducing the shelf height to make items more accessible. Returning to my story of how I came to service design, using design thinking as an interior designer helped me deeply understand and meet client needs. I conducted interviews to design spaces that were not only functional but also tailored to each client’s lifestyle and aesthetic preferences. As the founder of an interior design firm, interviewing clients and potential clients expanded my understanding of how design choices are made, pushing me to explore deeper into enhancing everyday interactions through design. Discovering customer experience helped me realise that my calling is to create solutions that make everyday life easier and more delightful. I chose service design because it offers endless opportunities to make meaningful improvements in people’s lives, where I can apply my skills in empathy, strategic thinking, and creativity to solve real tasks. We googled "How to translate brands into physical spaces" and here's what we got: 1. How to brand your interior design/architecture business 2. Interior designers & architects who have a visual brand aesthetic 3. Brands who have a visual brand, i.e. McDonald's, Starbucks, and CVS None of the results were helpful and to be honest that wasn't surprising. Interiors and brand aren't often talked about in the same conversations, not really sure why. Public spaces are products afterall and all products are brands. Interiors are complex products they have a lot of problems they are solving at once while also looking really good - it's not easy and we couldn't possibly cover the complexities in one article. So, we didn't. We wrote an article focused on brand and its influence on spatial strategy and design to get the conversation started. Shop branding ✅✅ Client: Feli Nandi Our team at Albtin Production Studio was recently approached by a traditional clothing store looking to revamp their shop’s interior design. The goal of the project was to create a visually appealing and culturally-rich wallpaper that would showcase the store’s unique offerings and create a welcoming atmosphere for customers. We are proud to present the final product, which can be viewed in the video below. The process began with extensive research on traditional clothing and textile patterns from around the world. This helped us to understand the cultural significance of these patterns and ensure that our design would be respectful and authentic. We also conducted surveys and interviews with the store’s customers and staff to gain insight into their preferences and needs. Once we had gathered all the necessary information, our design team created a series of initial concepts for the wallpaper. These concepts were then presented to the store owner and their team for feedback. After several rounds of revisions, we arrived at a final design that incorporated a beautiful blend of traditional patterns and modern elements. The final design features intricate patterns and vibrant colors inspired by traditional textiles from various regions. The wallpaper also includes subtle nods to the store’s location and history, making it a perfect representation of the store’s identity. To ensure that the wallpaper was of the highest quality, we worked closely with a team of skilled artisans who specialize in traditional textile techniques. They carefully hand-painted the design onto the wallpaper, resulting in a stunning and unique product that truly captures the essence of the store. In conclusion, our shop wallpaper branding project for the traditional clothing store was a resounding success. The final design not only reflects the store’s commitment to cultural authenticity but also creates a warm and inviting atmosphere for customers. At first, they expecting insights solely on enhancing the visual appeal of their shops,but the participants were pleasantly surprised by the realization that design efficiency goes far beyond aesthetics. It was evident that optimizing space is not just about looks; it's a fundamental marketing strategy. The main lesson learned was how a proficient designer can elevate floor design efficiency. By tailoring space design to suit the specific business type and purpose, owners can significantly influence their profitability. I have shared a simple yet impactful tip that emerged:if a business's floor efficiency lags below 50% within its industry, the road to profitability becomes arduous. Conversely, surpassing 80% efficiency signals an opportunity for expansion to maximize profit potential. Introducing the bubble diagram method alongside the percentage of area method provided the participants with clarity, guiding them to make informed decisions when selecting a designer best suited to meet their aesthetic requirements. My focus throughout the session extended beyond surface-level aesthetics. It emphasized the necessity for owners to optimize their selling or service areas to fuel revenue growth. A competent designer, prioritizing value delivery, will consistently place client returns above mere ornamentation. Investing wisely in space efficiency paves the way for a lucrative business, aligning design with the company's financial objectives. Delving deeper into the essence of interior design, it is evident that it's more than just creating visually appealing spaces. It's about curating environments that seamlessly enhance customer experiences and support business objectives. By maximizing space functionality, businesses can cultivate a welcoming ambiance that encourages extended customer engagement with their offerings. Successful design should be strategic—factoring in elements like traffic flow, shelf placement, seating arrangements, and overall layout to ensure operational efficiency. Achieving a harmonious blend of aesthetics and functionality where each aspect serves a purpose in enriching the overall customer journey is key.
