The automated manufacturing process increases production quality and enables employees to focus on value-added work rather than repetitive tasks. The manufacturing approach also supports our Green and Blue Friction product lines. #GreenFriction reduces the amount of fine particulate matter emissions generated from braking by up to 90%. The #BlueFriction products minimize the use of chemicals or materials that have the potential to pollute water and harm marine life. 5% of the 285mn cars on the US roads reach the end of their lives each year. How will an industry set up to recycle steel, adapt to salvage batteries? The global automotive recycling market is worth ~$75 billion, and the process for salvaging cars has not changed in decades. Auto salvage operators processing petrol-powered cars, harvest pieces from camshafts to hubcaps for resale as spare parts or scrap metal. Recycling EV batteries and aluminum castings will require a new breed of salvage operators. Companies like Redwood Materials and Li-Cycle are building full-scale battery recycling facilities in anticipation of a deluge of used EV batteries in the coming decade. At these facilities, EV batteries are collected, disassembled, shredded, heated to remove non-metallic components, recover metals, purify them, and reuse in new batteries. The winners in the EV battery recycling race will be decided based on their ability to secure a steady flow of used batteries at scale. Is there still room for legacy salvage businesses in the new EV paradigm? Legacy operators will continue to be important aggregators of used vehicles, they have the lots, tow trucks, and cranes to store, move, and sort EVs and ICE vehicles. The journey continues and today a customer asked me: “Based on your experience, what’s the future battery technology for lift trucks?” And here’s my answer: Lithium-ion batteries were introduced in the 1990s; they’re built around smarter, cleaner and more efficient technology, that has advanced even further today due to the automotive industry experience. In comparison with lead-acid, they: 🕗 have 3-4 times longer lifetime 🏭 don’t need a charging facility, or equipment for battery change 🔌 are easier to charge and can be opportunity charged 🔋 Have low maintenance needs 🌡 have a Thermal Management System for optimized battery performance and lifetime 🚘 can be charged with CCS 1 or 2 – exactly the same as in the automotive industry Hence, based on these, Li-Ion is the future battery technology. The most common Li-Ion technologies at the moment are: NMC and LFP and they both have clear strengths. I truly believe that the automotive industry will lead the way and guide the lift truck business as well. Equipped with advanced safety features, these vehicles were handed over as part of Tata Group's Founder's Day celebrations.
