Hello Friends! 🌟 We believe in the power of theatre to inspire a more equitable and inclusive society through the production of professional, English-language premieres of contemporary Quebec plays. In order to improve our plays and social impact, we invite you to participate in this survey, which has two main goals: 🤝 1. Getting to know our most committed supporters better and evaluating their experience with Talisman in order to improve our offerings. 🌈 2. Evaluating the diversity of Talisman's supporters in order to identify gaps in accessibility and reach of our theatre. Click the link in the comment to answer the survey (less than 5 minutes!) by February 9, 2024. 🏆 By participating in this survey, you have the chance to win a 70$ PAIR OF TICKETS from La Chapelle Scènes Contemporaines that will be drawn among the respondents! Reflecting on my journey with La Crosse Community Theatre's expansion into the old church building, the question "What did I get myself into?" feels particularly relevant. I’ve embarked on something both exciting and daunting. This historic space is full of potential, but realizing it will take more than just optimism and a fresh coat of paint. When we chose this church, it felt like a perfect blend of La Crosse’s history and our theatre’s future. The building has charm and character, but it’s also full of quirks—architectural features that weren’t designed with modern theatre in mind. As I settle in, I’m beginning to grasp the challenges ahead. Walking through these halls, it’s impossible not to feel the weight of what’s ahead. The building is full of potential—to become a hub for creativity and a gathering place for our community. But right now, it’s all just potential. The real work is just beginning. We have big plans, but they’re still just plans—ideas waiting to be transformed into reality. From designing new spaces to ensuring this historic building meets modern needs, there’s a lot to do. It’s a little overwhelming, but also exciting, knowing we're on the brink of something transformative for La Crosse Community Theatre. The road ahead will be challenging, with moments of doubt and unexpected surprises. But that’s part of the journey—navigating the unknown, adapting to challenges, and staying focused on my goals. This project will take time, effort, and collaboration. I’ll need to test ideas and learn as I go, but I’m committed to seeing it through because I believe in the potential of this space. So here I am, at the beginning of a long and winding journey. I don’t know exactly what the future holds, but I’m confident this is a journey worth taking. There’s a lot of work to be done, but also a lot to look forward to. This building has the potential to become something truly special, and I’m ready to do the work to make that happen. In the end, what did I get myself into? A project full of challenges and possibilities—one that I wouldn’t trade for anything. I’ve only just begun, but I’m excited to see where this journey will take me.

The big news of the day is that Toronto's oldest movie theatre, the historic Revue Cinema, is shutting its doors amidst landlord disputes. This news comes on the heels of the Science Centre closure, the Hot Docs theatre closure, and the closure of Ontario Place. These cherished places are incredibly meaningful to the people of Toronto: public green space, museums and arts venues are not simple gathering places for residents of our city, they each play a spiritual role in fostering spaces for reflection, rest, escape. Especially for poor artists. In the privacy of our little dinner parties, the most common question circling around the minds of young and emerging artists revolves around housing: can we afford to live in the city anymore? When we are presented with such hostility by our provincial and municipal administrations? Without our theatres, where we will screen our films? In the midst of a severe housing crisis, where will we live? Big questions amidst these tragic closures.

There is no one-size-fits-all design to accommodate all the world’s staging needs. From theaters and banquet halls to educational facilities and arenas -- every venue, every group and every production has its own set of criteria and needs. Stability and strength are critical, but portability and user-friendly convenience are also essential. Here are four trends that bring increased flexibility and functionality to the performing arts arena: https://lnkd.in/g_q-qkiP

I was fortunate enough to be awarded the Stuart and Normal Leslie Churchill Fellowship (2023) Winston Churchill Trust (Australia), which allowed me to embark on an incredible research trip earlier this year across Chile, the United States, and the United Kingdom. My research focused on how to create extraordinary professional ‘public theatre’ with, for and by community. During my travels, I had the privilege of working with and learning from leading theatre companies, particularly examining large-scale public theatre initiatives such as the Public Theatre's Public Works Program in New York and the National Theatre's Public Acts in London. Additionally, my research explores the significant impact of smaller theatre company initiatives like Woolly Mammoth in Washington and Common Wealth in the UK - who create exceptional theatre works, deeply rooted in community engagement. The report I have written advocates for the expansion of community-engaged theatre within professional spaces in Australia, drawing on successful international models. It highlights the profound cultural and social benefits that such practices can bring, and offers strategic insights into how these successes can be adapted to different cultural contexts within our own country. The findings emphasize the transformative power of theatre as a catalyst for societal engagement and sectoral evolution. It also speaks to a proposed model of working which I believe holds great potential for Australia, blending the strengths of both large and small-scale endeavours. I am deeply committed to opening up a dialogue on how we can break down structural and financial barriers to make the performing arts more accessible, create improved pathways for artistic creation, and support theatre companies in diversifying and becoming more inclusive. This research is a step toward fostering informed practices in these areas. My report is in the link below. Very excited to share. #winstonchurchilltrust

National Arts Theatre, the DEN of creative performances in the heart of Lagos. I went there with family as a child. I have seen Olu Jacobs, Joke Silva, RMD, Oga Bello, Aluwe, Baba Sala and many actors on stage. There were musical and cultural performances as well, King Sunny Ade, Lijadu sisters and others representing different genre of music and tribes in Nigeria 🇳🇬. Performer's Rights are hardly discussed in Nigeria 🇳🇬. Most discussion focus on Copyright with little or nothing on related or neighbouring rights. Expressions of Folklore and Performances are regarded as related or neighbouring rights. World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) defines: 'Related rights, also referred to as neighboring rights, protect the legal interests of certain persons and legal entities that contribute to making works available to the public or that produce subject matter which, while not qualifying as works under the copyright systems of all countries, contains sufficient creativity or technical and organizational skill to justify recognition of a copyright-like property right. The law of related rights deems that the productions that result from the activities of such persons and entities merit legal protection as they are related to the protection of works of authorship under copyright. Some laws make clear, however, that the exercise of related rights should leave intact, and in no way affect, the protection of copyright.' So related rights is an extention of copyright but not copyright. It is a place for performers to seek protection. The Copyright Act of Nigeria 🇳🇬 2022 has provisions on performance. LIVE PERFORMANCE. The next assignment will be on performance and it is dedicated to a friend that recently passed on. A huge loss to academia.

In assessment for UNESCO, council recommends against Estonia Theater annex In a recent assessment for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) regarding a planned annex to the Estonia Theater in Tallinn, the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) recommended building an opera house elsewhere, not as an extension to the current building. In its technical review, the Estonian representative to UNESCO Priit Pallum, ICOMOS noted that the planned extension would overshadow the historic Estonia Theater building without any architectural integration, and recommended considering building a new theater elsewhere in Tallinn, in order to realize its architectural potential while at the same time satisfying its operational needs. ICOMOS stressed that if an extension to the historical theater building does remain under consideration, then the scope of the intrusion into the existing building should be defined in the course of a broader debate in order to preserve cultural heritage values, including the physical structure as well as the local context. https://lnkd.in/ddWEyekB #UNESCO #EstoniaTheater #CulturalHeritage #Recommendation #UNESCOassessment

What will the performance spaces of the future look like? Theatre design has always responded to the times, and as audience expectations and technology evolve, do we need a different approach to our buildings to cater for a different kind of experience? https://lnkd.in/g-8Vp_Sw #ITEAC #Theatre #TheatreDesign #Architecture #TheatreArchitecture
