A world leading fleet initiative to introduce electric emergency ambulances has been launched by Transport for London. The first fully electric ambulance to respond to emergency 999 calls in London had its first call out in January. Daniel Elkeles, chief executive at London Ambulance Service (LAS), said: “This is a gamechanger for ambulance designs across the world. “We’ve had electric patient transport vehicles and support vehicles, but until now we haven’t had an electric ambulance responding to life-threatening emergencies in London.” Four fully electric ambulances from Ford Motor Company are expected to be delivered to London Ambulance Service this year. Hospitals are also being fitted with fast chargers as part of the initiative. London Ambulance Service already has a growing EV fleet with 42 fully-electric fast-response cars and three electric motorcycles. 🚑💡 Ambulance or Taxi? Today, I broke my bone for the first time – and to my surprise, calling a taxi was faster than waiting for an ambulance. 🚕 Even though I live just 500m from one hospital, I chose to go to another one 3km away because the medical support there is much better. Here’s the surprising part: although there were ambulances parked just 3km away from my apartment, they sent a brigade from Jüri, 13km away! Meanwhile, I waited just 1 minute for a taxi, which was 40 times faster than the 45+ minutes it would’ve taken for the ambulance to arrive. How does this make sense? Why are we calling ambulances from so far away when local teams are available? What does this say about our emergency response logistics?
