Cities must be designed for toddlers, elders, and everyone in between. When cities are designed for humans rather than for cars, they will respond to everyone’s needs much easier.

Last week at Climate Week in NY, I got the opportunity to participate in a panel with two friends I admire, Robin Chase and Majora Carter. The amazing discussion moderated by Yuki Numata happened after a magnificent presentation from Blaine Merker and Rushad Nanavatty. Redesigning current infrastructure and creating new infrastructure in cities should be the focus of more efforts. More than 2.5 billion people will be moving to cities within the next few years especially in Africa and Asia, and most of the infrastructure needed is still to be constructed. In order to effectively shift to greener energy sources while reducing the amount of energy used, it is important to consider factors including how people commute, their relationships to their homes, and the design process. This refers to bringing transportation planning, housing, and land use into the same conversation about urban planning. Many thanks Benjamin Holland for the invitation. Yesterday I had the priviledge to talk to students and professors at Yale University about urban mobility from my experience at WRI and Bogotá as a practicioner. Grateful to the Hixon Center for Urban Sustainability for hosting me. Looking forward to engaging in more spaces.
