We will continue to support our state, local & tribal partners in their response and recovery efforts for as long as it takes.

What’s the solution? I know there are no easy answers but what steps can we take? I hear Jim Mullins comments about local EM not always knowing how to access federal resources. I hear the finger pointing to the feds saying you don’t pay attention to us at the local level. If both are true… where is the middle? Is it the state resources? Is it better training of local EM’s of the resources? Or maybe easier access to the resources? Is it a stronger mutual aid system? Is it a different approach to community preparedness… going from a “culture of preparedness” to a “culture of responsibility”? What are your thoughts? Hard questions for all of us.

Today, Hawaiߵi state officials released the Lahaina Fire Comprehensive Timeline Report, which is the first phase of our independent analysis. The report chronologically details the major events and response efforts related to the catastrophic fire that struck Lahaina, HI on August 8–9, 2023. “FSRI’s goal was to thoroughly document the facts around this tragic event to allow for subsequent analysis and lessons learned. As crews search through the wreckage of the Maui wildfires, Hawaii's governor is warning that "a lot" more fatalities are expected. "We do expect to see a lot more loss of life," Gov. Josh Green told Honolulu ABC affiliate KITV on Tuesday. "It's going to be tragic. I want to brace everyone for that." Note: Just as Uvalde was fully prepared for a school shooting per the generally accepted (federal/DHS) training and readiness standards, there’s nothing to suggest Maui was not completely up to meeting the all hazards readiness standards for what it faced. In other words, what’s been ‘acceptable’ is truly unacceptable, and the litany of horrific losses in “preventable disasters” has a common core. Over the last two decades, DHS funding has dominated emergency preparedness activities, supplanting state and lical efforts (and $$) with imposing generic national standards aimed at the lowest common denominator and training where everyone does well without feeling challenged (or too often not feeling any smarter or better skilled). Lahaina is the ever so predictable result, as was Uvalde.
