Last week I passed the five year mark as Director at SF DEM. And what a five years it has been! I feel incredibly humbled by and proud of the people at DEM - the dispatchers and the entire 911 team, our emergency managers, our regional UASI planning team, the EMS Agency team, our newest and growing group - street response coordination and the many amazing support staff that make this work possible, HR, IT, facilities, and special projects (like the massively important CAD replacement project). I could do long posts about each of these groups - there are important stories to tell about each of them. Last month I participated in a panel at the Natural Hazards Workshop in Denver with my incredible colleagues from Denver, Los Angeles, and my original hometown, Philadelphia. We all spoke from the heart about our own experiences and where we see the current and future state of emergency management. If I could summarize the over-arching theme to this conversation it would be that our scope has expanded - exponentially. That climate change and politics has had the most impact on our work (outside of the global pandemic) and that community, diversity and inclusion is paramount to our success. And all of this has taken a toll on us, and our staff. We are taking on crisis management in areas that we would not have predicted ten years ago. So whether it is homelessness, the fentanyl crisis, immigration and asylum seekers, extreme weather or political unrest, Emergency Management has been called into service. We need to recruit and hire staff who are creative, analytical and diverse. We need planners, project managers, and community outreach workers. And we need to take care of them. The work of emergency management becomes more challenging everyday. It is interesting and rewarding, but it also takes it toll. So as I look forward I know we face huge and expanding challenges. We need to expand resources and include self-care and care of our staff as a priority. To be a leader in this field at this time is a privilege and a challenge. One that we will meet with resolve, commitment, and experience. I know that I will work hard, and also prioritize time to restore to continue to serve. I will continue to go to the mountains and the sea for my peace and restoration. We serve, we work, we play and we love. Code enforcement officers do more than notify your neighbors when the grass is too tall. They, along with other municipal agencies play a critical role in mitigating the worst impacts of natural disasters by making sure neighborhoods are up to code. National Preparedness Month presents a great opportunity for municipalities and code enforcement departments to engage with their communities and promote a culture of safety and preparedness.
