☀ How the Limmat Foundation changes the lives of its beneficiaries ☀ Saberes is a project for childcare providers in Colombia. Through its training courses, educators learn to work professionally with children aged zero to five years, providing them with high-quality care. The project aims to expand their expertise and teach them how best to support the children in developing their potential. The gratitude of the beneficiaries can be seen in many ways, for example in the testimony of Jenny, who took part in the project "Saberes" in Colombia as a childcare provider: “Saberes' training courses have helped me to improve my organizational and planning skills in particular. This was always a big challenge for me at work in the past. Through the training program, I learned that I can incorporate all the materials in my environment into the learning process. Saberes has not only provided me with strategies to use in my work with children and their families, but also in my personal life. Although childcare is not part of my policy portfolio, I am responsible for representing wider areas of the Department for Education's work in the UK House of Lords. At the beginning of April we announced the roll out of one of our key manifesto promises: to expand childcare so that parents, especially mothers, were not faced with the dilemma of choosing between having a career or having a family. Last week I repeated the statement made by David Johnston OBE in the House of Commons and took questions on it. We have now made 15 hours of government-funded childcare available for working parents with 2-year-old children and we set ourselves an initial target of 150,000 children who would benefit. Last week we passed 200,000 children, which we are delighted about. Back in 2010 things were very different: parents of some three and four-year-olds were only able to get 12.5 hours of childcare. By September 2025, when the new entitlements are fully rolled out, hundreds of thousands of working parents will be up to an estimated £7,000 a year better off, money they can put to good use in making choices that are right for them. It is great news for families but also the country as a whole. This is part of the government’s plan to help families and by September 2025 working parents will be able to get 30 hours from the term after their child turns nine months to when their child starts school. We will be investing an additional estimated £4bn a year in childcare by the end of the rollout. We hope that this will be transformative for families. Most of the questions I was asked focused on the extra demands that this expansion will put on the sector and we will need more capacity. So we have put measures in place to help the sector to deliver this record expansion by increasing the number of staff and places available - both at nurseries and childminders. We are currently running a consultation on how we can improve the recruitment and retention of childminders and support the role of childminder agencies in the sector. Excuse my lengthy post, but this is something that affects OUR children and OUR community. Today the House Appropriations Committee has cut $24.3 million from the Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP) in the state budget, HB1. This is a 50% cut to the funds that were secured just last year. The full house will vote on the budget this Thursday, April 25th. Please take one minute to contact your representative today to tell them that those nearly 2,000 seats are desperately needed, and we cannot afford to lose them! The CCAP waitlist already has 6,500 children on it, some of whom have been waiting over a year for care. We need more investment in this program, not less. If these parents lose their child care, they may be forced to cut back on their work hours or quit their jobs entirely, which leads to an unreliable workforce and can hurt our economy. Child care breakdowns already cost Louisiana $1.3 billion a year—how much productivity will be lost when thousands of seats are eliminated? How can we expect young families to stay in or move to Louisiana if there is not enough available care for their children?Additionally, St Tammany has a grant program called CCAP B-3 which provides free tuition to children ages birth - 3 years in order for their parent to work and/or attend school. This program serves over 250 children within OUR parish! These children could be your neighbor, your relative, or even your own children! This program will be affected by this budget cut as well. That means more families in OUR community struggling to pay for daily, basis needs and more businesses struggling to find employees to work (because many will have to quit or work fewer hours bc they lack child care). Please contact our legislators and let them know that child care is a need for OUR families, OUR workforce, and OUR economy! This week, we are sharing our fourth priority from the Election Platform: ‘securing the best start to life, early learning’. 👶 🤱 👩👧👧 Early childhood education is vital for a child's future and for vulnerable or at-risk children. It is key to achieving developmental milestones for a healthy childhood and adolescence. Over half of ACT children aged 0-5 attend early learning. Children in out-of-home care or protection especially rely on the availability of emergency placements in early learning services. Before July 2024, our services provided 40 emergency placements weekly for these vulnerable children, many with complex needs. Recent government funding changes however threaten the viability of the emergency placement program. Increased funding for emergency childcare placements came at the expense of overall places, forcing services to reduce availability. The fee-free three-year-old program is also underfunded and unsustainable, hindering its effectiveness. Without sufficient support, early learning services will struggle to meet the needs of all children. About last night, NS Sandra Pinto and I were extended an invitation as ECEC providers of Liverpool Council, along with other professionals, and active practitioners to join this engaging and interactive annual event at Macquarie University. The CRECE 2024 June Wangmann Memorial Lecture. This year's lecture featured a thought-provoking discussion that addressed the current landscape of early childhood education and care (ECEC). The ECEC community has actively participated in various national inquiries and reviews over the past year, influencing the outcomes significantly. In response to these ongoing developments, the focus of the lecture shifted towards "Engaging with stakeholders in locally relevant ECEC program initiatives," highlighting community-based priorities over national concerns. The distinguished speaker for the event was Associate Professor Jen Skattebol, the Deputy Director of the TeEACH Research Centre at Western Sydney University. Following her comprehensive presentation, attendees had the chance to participate in a Q&A session and a Panel Discussion. The panelists included Dr. Catherine Jones (Early Childhood Teacher and Educational Leader at Goodstart Early Learning Kurri Kurri), Paula Hind (Family Coordinator at KU Macquarie Fields Preschool), and Natalie Grenfell (General Manager Inclusion Programs at KU Children's Services). Key Points of Discussion Cultural Competence: The lecture stressed the importance of cultural competence in ECEC programs to ensure services are culturally appropriate and inclusive. Stakeholder Engagement: Highlighted as essential for democratic and effective ECEC practices, with a focus on engaging families and communities as primary stakeholders. Equity Policies: Addressing the need for policies that promote equity and tackle market failures to ensure fair access to quality ECEC services. Dual Role of ECEC Providers: Discussed the dual role in assisting children to settle into both Australian society and childcare services. Language and Community Connections: Emphasized the value of maintaining language and building strong community connections. Challenges and Structural Barriers: Identified challenges such as navigating systemic barriers, addressing trauma, and ensuring adequate care ratios. Professional Development: The need for ongoing professional learning and capacity building for educators to support high-quality ECEC services. The 2024 June Wangmann Memorial Lecture highlighted the crucial role of stakeholder engagement and cultural competency in developing early childhood education and care programs that are relevant to local communities. The conversations underscored the persistent obstacles and the significance of equity policies, professional growth, and community relationships within the ECEC field.

A new report by Child Care Now provides a baseline for monitoring the expansion of licensed early learning and child care spaces across Canada since the implementation of the Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care (CWELCC) Agreements.
