Admittedly, I'd never previously considered the difficulties that women face in receiving treatment - did you know FDA guidelines didn’t even include testing of medicines on women until 1993? What has become clear to me is that women's health has long been far overlooked, undervalued and underfunded. However, through on-going conversations with leaders at the cutting edge of women's health, it's clear that dynamics are shifting and women's reproductive health is finally receiving the attention it deserves. We're providing a platform in Boston, this July, so that the community can come together and discuss the latest treatments for Endometriosis, BV, Menopause, Infertility, Maternal Morbidity & Mortality and more. Let's remove the stigma and ensure women are provided with access to high quality and effective treatments. 🇪🇺 News from the European Commission! 🇪🇺 The European Parliament embraced measures proposed by the Commission in January 2024 to enhance the availability of in vitro diagnostics (IVDs), crucial for patients and healthcare providers. These measures extend transition periods for manufacturers to comply with new EU IVD rules, ensuring patient safety and reducing the risk of shortages: 👉Class D devices (e.g., HIV tests) transition until December 2027. 👉Class C devices (e.g., cancer tests) transition until December 2028. 👉Class B and A devices (e.g., pregnancy tests, blood collection tubes) transition until December 2029. Manufacturers are now obligated to notify authorities of potential supply disruptions six months in advance, enabling proactive measures for patient care. This agreement also paves the way for mandatory parts of the European Database on Medical Devices (Eudamed) by 2026, enhancing transparency in the EU market. Next steps: The Council will formally adopt the Regulation, effective upon publication in the Official Journal. The Commission stands ready to collaborate with Member States and stakeholders to ensure smooth implementation. Clinical trial enrollments that reflect the demographic diversity of the impacted patient population generate insightful scientific knowledge on how therapies work across all those affected by the disease. Trials with diverse participants also may improve access to promising care for patients whose age, gender, race, and ethnicity might be underrepresented. Soon this approach will infuse most study designs, as the FDA is poised to require clinically relevant populations for most pivotal trials. Awareness to ACTION: Investing in Solutions to End Health Disparities. The Lancet Breast Cancer Commission report released this week underscores the critical issue of #healthdisparities, highlighting its impact on everything from prevention to treatment outcomes in #breastcancer patients. We know from uncountable reports, research, data, and evidence that this extends far beyond breast cancer, as #socialdeterminents of health are at the center of every aspect of healthcare and public health. We have overwhelming acknowledgment of the impact of disparities. It is beyond time to step up the action. Investing in solutions to address these inequalities yields multifaceted benefits across all health domains, including maternal health, and reproductive health. In addition to fundamental right to health, investment in addressing disparities make a strong financial case. In the US, social determinants of health like race and socioeconomic status are deeply linked to morbidity and mortality rates. By tackling these disparities, we can improve health outcomes and create a more equitable healthcare system. The report emphasizes the importance of: ➡ Combating discrimination: Racial and ethnic discrimination significantly affect breast cancer outcomes. The report highlights successful anti-discrimination policies and interventions as a path forward. ➡ Empowering minority groups: The inclusion and mobilization of minority groups is crucial for achieving equitable healthcare. Time to step up to push for: 🎯 Comprehensive policies: Policies that address the root causes of health disparities are essential for lasting change. 🎯 A healthcare system for all: We must build a system that truly caters to everyone's needs, regardless of background. 🎯 Multisectoral, Multidisciplinary Partnerships: Collaboration across sectors and disciplines is crucial for developing effective solutions. 🎯 Stronger Public Health Laws: Public health laws play a crucial role in ensuring healthy environments, promoting preventive measures, and reducing health disparities. 🎯 Community Power Building: Allyship and support to communities are essential for driving change and ensuring solutions meet their needs. I hold out hope that my daughter, and countless other children and adults living with a rare illness, will see treatments for the thousands of conditions that don’t yet have a solution. But this dream will not be fully realized until our federal and state policymakers choose to stand with patients and protect the pipeline of future medications. We can’t fall back on rare disease innovation – too many lives are depending on it. In a new opinion for The Daily Record, I call on #Maryland policymakers to support patients living with rare or chronic illnesses and ensure that patients like my daughter will see new treatments and cures for their conditions. Maryland’s Prescription Drug Affordability Board (PDAB) and other drug price control policies will block access to critical treatments for patients and hinder much-needed medical innovation: https://bit.ly/47QuJ8X 🚀Join me in advocating for policies prioritizing patients. Let's make sure #Maryland continues to lead the way in medical innovation. Your voice matters. Contact your state representative through email or social media about why policymakers must prioritize meeting unmet patient needs over price controls! #healthcare #technology #innovation #future #data
