Two former university presidents, Tom Langevin and Allen Koenig, sought a way for college presidents to remain engaged in higher education in their retirement. They created a new model, a redefinition, of interim leadership. Their innovative business model and their connections throughout the industry quickly redefined what interim leadership could be; taking what was previously a largely transitional mode of leadership to a way to help institutions deploy highly experienced leaders as intentional, transformational interim administrators. It is so important for students to see themselves represented in influential leadership positions at school, showing them what's possible for their own lives and careers. However, while the number of school-aged Black and Latino children has increased significantly, Black and Latino men make up only 13% of school principals in the U.S. To help ensure students see themselves reflected in the educators and leaders around them, NFBLME: The National Fellowship for Black and Latino Male Educators is working to close this gap. Through its unique programming, the organization helps Black and Latino men become principals and leaders throughout the education sector. https://lnkd.in/eeH-Jmwg

While the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act (Perkins V) makes no mention of educator diversity initiatives on the state level, it does require states to use their leadership funding for recruiting, preparing or retaining CTE teachers through preservice, professional development or leadership development programs. Locally, Perkins funds recipients are required to use funds to support professional development of the educator workforce and are permitted to use funds to support recruitment and retention activities and must consider teacher diversity as part of the comprehensive local needs assessment (CLNA). Combined, the state-level leadership funds and local Perkins funds can create more opportunities for recruiting Career Technical Education (CTE) teachers that are demographically representative of the learners they serve. SMART GROWTH AMERICA Thursday, June 20, 1:00 p.m. ET Complete Streets Webinar: Lessons Learned from On-the-Ground Safe Streets Projects from Alaska to Connecticut In 2023, Smart Growth America (SGA) hosted Complete Streets Leadership Academies in Alaska, California, Connecticut, and Tennessee. These four states joined local jurisdictions to help push their Complete Streets work further. The leadership academies are designed to increase capacity, improve relationships, and lead to immediate on-the-ground change through quick-build demonstration projects on dangerous state-owned arterials. Hear from program participants and SGA staff as they share what worked, what didn’t, and how those interested in these projects can leverage the experiences from this program to advance street safety in their own communities.
