Frequently cited as one of America’s best airports, Portland International Airport (PDX) will unveil its ZGF Architects-designed, expanded mass timber terminal in August. The expansion features a mass timber roof canopy and structure built from wood sourced within a 300-mile (482.8 km) radius of the terminal—paying homage to the local environment and highlighting the importance of sustainable materials and practices. ZGF’s commitment to sourcing timber from specific forests honors the contributions of the landowners to the region’s ecosystem—not only representing Portland and the Pacific Northwest, but also reinforcing the meaningful connection between a building like PDX and the people it serves. Managing Partner Sharron van der Meulen and Partner Gene Sandoval of ZGF share their perspective on these powerful connections, and the impact they can have on a region’s long-term resilience for Urban Land Institute's magazine. 🛳️ Today, we want to share with you the first Cruise Terminal Project we collaborated with as #SustainabilityConsultants in the United States and reached #LEEDGold BD+C V4 Certification 🛳️ 🚀 Let's go back to 2019 to tell you more about Port Miami Terminal B in Miami, FL. This project is a #CruiseTerminal, with an area around 180,000 ft2. In Sustyco LLC we will always remember this project, because it was an important milestone for us as consultants due to its use, design and size. The most important aspects of the project are: the #WaterEfficiency, reducing 44% the water sue compare with a baseline building, and on the energy side, the terminal is using 37% less #Energy than a baseline building. #UserExperience was also important in this building and for that, an #IndoorAirQuality testing were completed before the occupancy to identify potential contaminants inside the building that might affect the health of the occupants and visitors. This project obtained a LEED BD+C V4 Certification at #GoldLevel. If you want to know more about our work both in #Colombia and in the #UnitedStates, please do not hesitate to contact us, we will be happy to connect with you, and If you want to know more about how our path to sustainability has been, we invite you to follow us and do not miss our next posts. 🍃🌎🍃 #SustainableConstruction #IntegralSustainability #Sustainability2024 #SustainabilityUS #SustainabilityColombia #SustainabilityConsultants #LEED

Facing specific and unique building types is always a challenge for a LEED certification. One of the secrets of working with these type of buildings it's understanding the intent of the different #LEED credits, and identity and develop strategies that meets that intent. Sometimes it's better not follow the recipe, and use the team imaginationa and innovative thinking to implement #sustainability strategies.

✈️ Brisbane's $5 Billion Airport Upgrade Lacks a Sustainable Edge! 🪵 As airports globally adopt timber for its sustainable and aesthetic qualities, Brisbane Airport's AU$5 billion Future BNE project surprisingly veers off this eco-friendly path. 🔸 Key Points: 1️⃣ Ambitious Yet Traditional: Brisbane Airport's upgrade aims to ready it for the 2032 Olympics. However, despite sustainability claims by CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff, Wood Central reports a notable omission: the lack of eco-friendlier materials like mass timber, instead favouring conventional steel, aluminium, and concrete – significant contributors to global emissions. 2️⃣ Timber: The Road Not Taken: Clarissa Brandt from Timber Queensland points out the missed chance of using timber, known for its sustainability and low carbon footprint. Unlike its global counterparts like Seattle and Portland, integrating timber's biophilic qualities to reduce travel stress, Brisbane opts out, sparking debates on its environmental commitments. 3️⃣ What Lies Ahead: The airport's material choice, deviating from the eco-conscious trend in global airport designs, poses critical questions on its future sustainability narrative, especially with the upcoming Olympics and over 20 million yearly passengers. #questionforgroup Will Brisbane Airport's current choices impact its environmental goals and global standing? https://lnkd.in/g2nMVZTm 🔖 #sustainabledesign #aviation #bne #futurebne #brisbaneairport #timber #construction #airport #masstimber #infrastructure #auspol #qldpol #olympics #woodsolutions #engineering #lendlease #netzero

EBSA - Australia PHIVE (5 Parramatta Square) stands as a testament to sustainable design, earning a prestigious 6-star Green Star accreditation, a significant marker for public buildings. Designed with an eye toward eco-consciousness, PHIVE boast a layout that encourages thermal comfort and minimises reliance on traditional air conditioning, underlining Parramatta City Council’s commitment to operating PHIVE as a carbon-neutral entity. EBSA is honoured to have contributed to this landmark project by incorporating our energy-efficient Schneider BT90 thermally broken double-glazed louvres and digital CPS-M control panel into the building’s façade. These elements work seamlessly with the building management and control system (BMCS), enhancing air quality and facilitating the removal of aerosol particles through the use of thermal chimneys and operable louvres. Positioned at the core of Parramatta CBD, this Civic Centre not only serves as the community, cultural and civic hub but also sets a benchmark for government building sustainability in the state. Its design minimises the need for artificial heating and cooling, emphasizing environmental performance through sustainable design principles. EBSA has a range of air quality sensors that can be retrofitted to existing projects and work in conjunction with new or existing automated facade systems to extend the benefits if improved air quality and environmental control to educational and professional environments. ✈️ Does Brisbane’s $5 Billion airport revamp lack vision? 🗞️ In Wood Central’s story of the week, we unpack the Future BNE redevelopment, Australia’s most ambitious airport project. 🌿 Amidst a global shift toward sustainable construction, Brisbane Airport's AU$5 billion Future BNE project raises eyebrows for bypassing the green trend of using timber—a material embraced worldwide for its eco-credentials and aesthetic appeal. 🔸 Key Insights: 1️⃣ Aspiring for Modernity, Yet Holding to Tradition: While Brisbane Airport gears up for the 2032 Olympics with a significant upgrade, it clings to traditional materials. CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff's sustainability assertions are called into question with a conspicuous absence of greener options like mass timber in favour of the more emission-intensive steel, aluminium, and concrete. 2️⃣ The Overlooked Timber Trail: Timber Queensland's Clarissa Brandt underscores the overlooked opportunity to harness timber's sustainable and carbon-minimising advantages. Unlike airports such as Seattle, Portland and even Prague that meld timber's natural aesthetic to alleviate travel stress, Brisbane Airport's choice sidesteps this environmentally attuned option, igniting discussions on its dedication to green principles. 3️⃣ Repercussions for Tomorrow: Brisbane Airport's selection of materials diverges from the environmentally forward-thinking trajectory seen in international airport design, prompting serious reflection on its prospective sustainability storyline, an aspect that gains prominence considering the anticipated Olympic spotlight and the airport's annual footfall exceeding 20 million. #questionforgroup How will Brisbane Airport's material choices weigh on its environmental ambitions and international reputation?
