Did you know that August is National Water Quality Month? This month is about raising awareness about the importance of clean water for humans, wildlife, and ecosystems. We must prioritize tough conversations about the issues we're facing in regard to clean water, like impaired waters, reduced wetlands protections, forever chemicals, and the effects of climate change. However, we cannot just harp on the negatives. We must also take time this month to tap into our creative and innovative sides and think about what we can do to make access to clean water in our future a priority for everyone, everywhere. Today, the European Environment Agency publishes the 6-yearly report on the state of water in Europe based on Member States' data, among other things based on mandatory reporting under the Water Framework Directive. The report discusses in detail the relationship between existing European regulations affecting water policy and the challenges we face (e.g. substances of concern, climate change). The report comes up with some general improvement proposals to strengthen water resilience in Europe. The final chapter looks ahead with a new stimulus from the Nature Restoration Act, water security in relation to climate change and the transition to circular economy.
