In 2020, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD)—each with long-standing investments in community-engaged research—launched CEAL. Eleven CEAL regional teams consisting of academic investigators, community partners, and other organizations were rapidly assembled and stood up in the states bearing the greatest burden and paying the highest costs of the pandemic. Since its launch in 2020, CEAL has grown in size and impact, now including twenty-one regional teams and seven programs addressing additional areas of health disparity including maternal health and climate health. In a recent editorial published in a special issue of the American Journal of Public Health (AJPH), CEAL Co-Chairs, Dr. Gary Gibbons and Dr. Eliseo Perez-Stable describe the rapid launch of CEAL and how programs like the CEAL Consultative Resource (CEACR) and the Network for Community-Engaged Primary Care Research (NCPCR) contributed to CEAL's community-engaged approaches during the COVID-19 pandemic. As we navigate the post-European Union election landscape in Brussels, we look forward to working with newly elected representatives and urging them to act to improve outcomes for people with heart failure. Cardiovascular diseases, including heart failure, are growing in prevalence around the world. Heart failure is already the leading cause of hospitalisation in Europe, and nearly 15 million people across the continent are estimated to be living with the condition. The time to act is now. Urgent political prioritisation of heart failure research and funding is required to achieve early diagnosis and treatment. By detecting heart failure at an earlier stage, we can reduce the burden it places on health systems and improve quality of life for people living with it. Together, we can make a difference. #Advocacy #EUelections #Healthcare #HeartFailureMission https://lnkd.in/eKnYzT49

ICYMI: San Joaquin County Public Health Services (SJCPHS) aims to advance health equity, promote healthy living, and improve the conditions that impact the overall well-being of over 790,000 residents in San Joaquin County. In a study published by UC Davis in June 2022, SJC was one of the three counties with significantly higher rates of congenital syphilis (CS) compared to larger metro counties, with 297 CS cases per 100,000 live births. In determining contributors to the higher CS rates in SJC, researchers identified additional missed opportunities for prevention, screening, and treatment in the Emergency Department (ED) and Correction Settings. Learn how SJC is partnering with MX to utilize admission, discharge, and transfer (ADT) notifications and access longitudinal patient records to monitor communicable and infectious diseases. https://lnkd.in/dsfn3zEP

QUT Health researchers, including childhood respiratory disease expert QUT Professor Anne Chang and The Australian Centre for Health Services Innovation (AusHSI), have called for and developed a framework for global efforts to address the drivers of chronic respiratory disease (CRD). The review, published in Lancet Respiratory Medicine, highlights the significantly higher burden of CRD in the world's Indigenous populations, identifying the risk of respiratory-related hospitalisations for Australia’s Indigenous People to be 2.4 times higher than non-Indigenous. Prof. Chang noted the importance of the strategies for all people, but underscored that implementation of the framework is "more pressing for Indigenous People who have a high prevalence of risk factors for CRD including low birthweight, prematurity, poor nutrition, air pollution, and a high burden of infections and poverty” Read the full article here: https://bit.ly/4dGwOs2 (Main Image: Getty Images Credit: martin-dm. In its most recent health research, the World Economic Forum's Oral Health Affinity Group highlights that oral diseases affect a billion more people globally than cases of mental disorders, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory diseases, and all cancers combined. The report “Economic Rationale for a Global Commitment to Invest in Oral Health,” explores the economic reasoning for investing in oral health and why healthcare systems need to consider the mouth alongside the rest of the body. https://hubs.la/Q02z-YRL0 At Benevis we are committed to elevating visibility for the importance of maintaining oral health and the critical correlation that it has with good physical and mental health. By addressing affordability and accessibility barriers to care we aim to put children and their families on a longitudinal path towards better overall health and wellness.
Half the world is affected by oral disease – here’s how we can tackle this unmet healthcare need

Addressing the considerable increase in both maternal and early congenital syphilis cases in Ontario requires a multi-component approach including: • Updating provincial congenital syphilis surveillance case definitions to improve case detection for more accurate monitoring of epidemiological patterns in Ontario. • Improving access to prenatal syphilis screening early in pregnancy. • Designing approaches that enable equitable prenatal care access for those experiencing homelessness and who use substances. • Dedicating efforts to address the social determinants of health (e.g., housing) and supporting individual-level risk behaviours (e.g., substance use) among pregnant individuals to improve access and engagement in prenatal care. • Increasing public health resources to manage and support maternal syphilis cases
Ontario has seen an increase in the incidence of early congenital syphilis since 2019. PHO’s new resource provides a comprehensive description of early congenital and maternal syphilis cases in the province, obtained from interviews with public health units where cases were reported from 2020-2022. https://lnkd.in/gw6B4fBq
