Suspect you might have Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (FH)? Remember, you're not on this journey alone. The process starts with understanding your family's health history, followed by a lipid profile blood test to determine the levels. Lastly, a detailed physical examination will identify any signs of FH. FH Europe Foundation
Non-profitorganisaties
The first int. umbrella organisation for patient organisations, patients and families with HeFH, HoFH, high Lp(a), FCS.
Over ons
FH Europe Foundation in an umbrella organisation of international patient organisations, actively working together to secure early identification and diagnosis of Familial Hyperlipidaemias, incl heterozygous and homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia (HeFH and HoFH), elevated Lipoprotein (a) (Lp(a)) and Familial Chylomicronaemia Syndrome (FCS), to prevent early cardiovascular disease (CVD). Foundation number KvK number: 86407481 Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (HeFH) is an inherited condition that leads to levels of cholesterol that are higher than that of the general population, sometimes double or even three or four times. FH affects around 1 in ca. 300 people – but the prevalence may vary across Europe. HeFH is a genetic condition caused by a ‘spelling mistake’ in our DNA – the genetic material with all the instructions needed to ‘build’ humans.

Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (HeFH) is far more common than people think! Globally, 1 in every 250-300 individuals has FH, marking it as the most prevalent inherited hyperlipidemia. Shockingly, about 90% of those with FH are unaware of their condition. Raising awareness is crucial. Remember, FH, particularly HeFH, is common and serious if undetected and untreated. HoFH, on the other hand, is rare and severe. Raising awareness is crucial; knowledge can lead to timely diagnosis and better outcomes. Familiar Hypercholesterolaemia (FH) has two forms. The more common one called heterozygous (HeFH), and a very severe and rare one which presents already early in childhood. To understand it better we have launched a dedicated awareness day on May 4th. As it is severe it requires different treatment strategies. This is why we have prepared for you dedicated trilogy of webinars covering various treatments. Register know to know more: September 17: Towards precision medicine and personalised prevention in HoFH: genetics and the novel therapies – gene therapies with Prof Mafalda Bourbon and Prof Steve Humphries, Michelle Watts and Thanos Pallidis.https://bit.ly/4dWfPli September 19: The golden standards in HoFH: statins, ezetimibe and apheresis with Dr Julia Brandt, Dr Antonio Gallo and Elsie Evans. https://bit.ly/4dWfT4w September 26: The recent trio of treatments in HoFH: PCSK9 inhibitor, lomitapide and evinacumab with Prof Luis Masana: Lomitapide and Dr Antonio Gallo, Prof Raul Santons, as well as Maria Nassif and Marwa Sadik. https://bit.ly/3z5c79I Learn more: https://lnkd.in/ePmrrj5c LIKE👍🏼, SHARE 🔁, COMMENT💬 to help raise awareness! #FHAwarenessDay #FHAware2024 #PreventThePreventable #FindFH #PerfectoFH #PerMedFH

Cholesterol is confusing! Navigating between different terms can be challenging. It is said cholesterol is dangerous. But then it is said it is an important lipid for our body to function. Then there is bad cholesterol and good cholesterol. Is it my total cholesterol, or HDL or LDL that matters? What is high? What is low? What units are the right ones? Let us help you. When we talk about cholesterol, we mean: HDL (good), which we keep high; LDL (bad), which we need to keep low to prevent its buildup in the arteries, which is dangerous. If you test cholesterol, you check: your total cholesterol, HDL and LDL. But remember in different countries, even labs, different units are used. Therefore it is important to know the exact numbers and units to assess if the values are good or dangerous. FH does not affect an individual. It affects families. A child with genetic high cholesterol has inherited it from one of their parents. That means that one of their grandparents had it too. Possibly aunts and or uncles, as well as sibling and cousins have it. Hence it called “familial”. We get it. It is very personal. And sometimes it very hard to talk about it with other family members. They live far, you don’t see them often, or it is just not okey to talk about such personal things. But what if asking about family history of high cholesterol or premature heart attacks could save your family member from a preventable catastrophe. What if sharing about your FH diagnosis could help identify other relatives at risk before it is too late. For patients with FCS A study, which was presented at #ESC2024 discusses the effects of a drug called #plozasiran on patients with Familial Chylomicronemia Syndrome (#FCS), a rare genetic disorder leading to extremely high triglyceride levels, which increases the risk of acute pancreatitis. Key Findings: • Triglyceride Reduction: Plozasiran significantly lowered triglyceride levels by up to 80% compared to 17% in those receiving a placebo. • Pancreatitis Prevention: Patients treated with plozasiran had a reduced risk of pancreatitis, with fewer cases observed compared to the placebo group. • Safety: The drug was generally well-tolerated, with a safety profile similar to placebo, although some patients with diabetes experienced mild increases in blood sugar levels. •Importance for FCS Patients: Plozasiran offers a promising new treatment to manage dangerously high triglyceride levels and reduce the risk of pancreatitis, which is a serious and common complication for those with FCS. https://lnkd.in/eNsTwRgY Are you a person living with or caring for someone with #FCS? What if the European Cardiovascular Health Plan had a chance to inspire other parts of the world to shift from CVD to CVH, where heath and quality of life are the ultimate goal, and where CVD prevention is prioritised and equitable care is a reality. Listen to Prof. Mutaz Al-Sabah from Iraqi Lipid Clinics Network (ILCN), a great advocate anpioneer in familial lipid disorders education, screening, detection and management in the ME and Africa, advocating for the Cardiovascular Health Plan implementation in Europe as a blueprint for other countries..

Cholesterol is coined as the fat big killer. And if it is high, we are made believe it is our fault . But what if cholesterol levels were high independently from us. And if they affected not just us but also our relatives. Cholesterol is a type of blood fat which is made in the liver. It's found in some foods too. We all need some cholesterol in our bodies just to keep them work. It is only when we are having too much of it - it can clog up your arteries and lead to health problems in the future, including heart disease. When high cholesterol- specifically LDL cholesterol affect us despite our healthy diet and good life habjits, physical activity- it might be genetiy caused. So if you and other family member have an unexplained high cholesterol or suffered from early heart attacks… it might be familial, as in familial hyper-cholesterol-aemia (high cholesterol in the family). Celebrating FH Awareness Day had never been more relevant than it is today. FH means familial Hypercholesterolaemia. A tongue twister for many. It is basically a high cholesterol (LDL) present in the family due to the genetic makeup. It affects one person in 300, regardless of their diet, lifestyle, physical activity. It can be very dangerous leading to heart attacks early in life. But it can be detected and prevented. Sadly, the reasons for high LDL cholesterol are not sufficiently investigated by doctors and ourselves. Leading to missed opportunities to have the correct diagnosis and to detect other family members with FH. So learn more about FH over the next 3 weeks. Prevent the preventable. Promote heart health in you and your loved ones!
