Head of Global Multi-Asset and Chief Investment Officer at T. Rowe Price | Author: “Beyond Diversification” (McGraw-Hill)
A pro handball player once told me about the best match he ever played. (By handball, I mean the sport that looks like squash but is played with your hands.) Here's the athlete describing a key moment in the match: "At full sprint and stretch, I caught up to the ball an inch from the ground and hit the perfect shot – a flat kill. I rolled over on the concrete to break my speed. On my knees, I squeezed both hands into fists and screamed at the top of my lungs. The crowd's roar was so overpowering that I couldn’t hear my voice." His voice was trembling, and I could swear his eyes were getting watery. But what happened next was a bit strange. He told me the rest of the story nonchalantly. He was down 9-10 and failed to score on his next serve. Then, his opponent served an ace. “Wait, you lost?” I asked. How could a world-class athlete be elated by defeat? “I don’t understand,” I interrupted. “How was that your ‘best moment’? What about all your wins?” He explained his rationale: “Measurable goals can impede self-motivation. Those who focus on mastery —rather than on the scoreboard—end up the biggest winners in the long run. That time, I played to the absolute best of my abilities.” This match changed him. From then on, he knew he belonged amongst the best in the game. The secret of sports psychology is that it’s not about winning—it’s about losing! It’s about maximizing learning and building mental resilience from losses. Isn't that a lesson that applies to business leadership, too? #leadership #psychology

In the competitive world of contact sports like football, basketball, and rugby, athletes are constantly pushing their bodies to the limit. In pursuit of peak performance, many athletes and their coaches have turned to various mobility training techniques, including stretching. However, it's time to shed light on a critical issue – why contact sport athletes should avoid stretching and consider safer alternatives like isometric strength training to increase range of motion. When you grow up in an era where the “Lions Roar” you will look at this sign with disdain. “No football.” Remember? Goh Chok Tong had a vision. He wanted Team Singapore to qualify for the World Cup. That was 2010. Then the dream fell on Mah Bow Tan’s lap. He “ call on all football-loving Singaporeans to give them your support. It will be the first step in a journey of a thousand miles towards Goal 2010." Never happened. What happened? When you put up signs everywhere in the void decks with the “no football “ what message are you conveying? If you don’t allow kids to be spontaneous and creative with the ball how are you going to nurture these kids to play for the country. Now you have Goal 2034… an aspirational target to be in next the World Cup. Can? How can? When you have half the team imported from other countries playing in the local league. For the sake of football create space for these kids to play. You have basketball courts badminton courts why can’t you have fotsul courts around the neighbourhood for them to be another Pele or Ronaldo or Messi. 2034.. is this going to be a dream come true or another nightmare.

The demands of handball goalkeeper position are very high, both physically and mentally. KARŞIYAKA 💚❤ Former National Handball Player🔙 EHF Master Coach&Pro Licence 🇹🇷Turkish Handball Team Head Coach 🔙 HAYAT AŞKI YAŞADIĞIN KADARDIR AŞK KARŞIYAKADIR
In handball, there is no single right way. Some coaches prefer to play without changing the positions of their players too much. However, I want my players to be positioned closer to each other and to be able to show the skill of positioning both close and far as needed. Every coach has a different plan in mind. I believe the most important plan is to find the best game suited to the characteristics of the players and the current squad to create a very significant game. The 1:1 game is the most valuable item on our menu in both offense and defense. It is one of our essentials. I know it's very difficult, but if we want to establish ourselves in the European arena, we need to justify this expensive menu. The 1:1 defense skill might be the biggest key to an early offensive transition, and similarly, the 1:1 offensive skill is the foundation of a quicker defensive transition. Handball is also the art of finding space. The one who finds the gap scores the goal. Every coach aims to present a team that dominates the game, regardless of the opponent, sticks to its game plan where everyone knows their role, but at the same time, individual skills and one-two combinations impact the game and the score.Nowadays, the most valuable player is the one who can quickly adapt to different formations, showing flexibility and responsiveness. Coaches who have such players are not afraid to try different formations. This way, they can create a team that changes the pace of a dominant game and strengthens transitions. Therefore, we aim to be more perceptive, quickly adapt to the exercises, and demonstrate the ability to implement them during matches.
