“The Fiber Broadband Association is excited to congratulate Massachusetts, New Mexico, and Virginia on receiving approval for the Initial Proposal for the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment program. These three states bring the current tally to 26 out of 56 eligible entities. We would also like to congratulate the NTIA for its diligence in awarding U.S. states and territories the necessary funds to close the digital divide and truly deliver ‘Internet for All.’ This continued momentum means these states are that much closer to moving forward with their plans to deploy high-speed networks, improving the quality of life for their communities.” - Gary Bolton, President & CEO, Fiber Broadband Association

The Pennsylvania Broadband Authority announced a proposed $9,673,144 grant to Comcast to expand high-speed internet to approximately 2,500 households across underserved portions of southern York County. Since 2020, the County of York and the YoCo Fiber Broadband Task Force have worked to document gaps in internet service across large swathes of York County and advocate to state and federal officials for increased public and private investment to expand broadband infrastructure. Although there remains much more to be done before our county is fully served, this is the type of investment that occurs when a county sets an ambitious vision to close the digital divide and welcomes all public and private partners and government officials to the table. We look forward to working with Comcast to ensure they are able to deploy funding and expand access to these households as quickly as possible. And we encourage other private internet service providers to join this work and continue investing in the YoCo Fiber’s vision for affordable countywide high speed, broadband access. 🚨 Is the UK's Broadband Strategy on Solid Ground? 🚨 Telecoms Minister Sir Chris Bryant’s recent open letter to the telecoms industry underscores the importance of infrastructure sharing, particularly the use of telegraph poles despite public pressure against the use of poles. In addition, a recent Opensignal study indicates that countries with limited infrastructure sharing but targeted government subsidies for private investment often achieve better broadband reliability. This contradiction is exactly what we explore in this article. We look at the benefits, risks, and potential alternatives to poles to ensure we not only meet our targets but also deliver robust and reliable connectivity for everyone. For those working in telecoms, digital infrastructure, or anyone interested in the future of UK connectivity, this is essential reading. 👉 https://buff.ly/4dJzoNh #Broadband #Telecoms #DigitalStrategy #Infrastructure #Connectivity #UKTech #SmartCities OpenreachDepartment for Science, Innovation and Technology Virgin Media Hyperoptic CityFibre Community Fibre Limited G.Network CommunicationssGigaclearrNetomniaTrooliiFibrussBrskktoobbHBNLLGiggleeJurassic FibreeSwish Fibre GiganettAllPoints FibreeInfracapitallConnect FibreeTruespeedd

Interesting article, on the hype for fiber broadband. Is it waning or is still hyping? However, the article misses the economic framework that government is the payor of last resort. Hype here seems to be connected to shareholders wins and quarterly subscriptions, excitement from the for-profits about profits. NY has secured a mix of grant awards from federal monies and state appropriations that aim to connect underserved and unserved locations to fiber broadband by locally driven and publicly funded efforts, in addition to the BEAD process which will include public and private telecom & broadband infrastructure companies. Local HYPE for municipal infrastructure programs is REAL in New York State!!

As mobile network operators (#MNOs) are looking at fiber in the middle mile to provide the transport for their fixed wireless access (#FWA) initiatives leveraging their licensed spectrum, WISPs are looking at utilizing unlicensed spectrum to serve their enterprise and residential customers with FWA. This article provides a good read on how fiber and wireless technologies are being relied upon for a converged network to address the most difficult “last mile” connectivity. Ultimately, to bridge the digital divide in a cost-effective and efficient manner, wireless in the last mile is a great option. And, on our part, our #multibeam #lensantennas are optimized for the last-mile in dense-urban, suburban and rural macro networks as the focus is on delivering digital equity effectively. Good write up here from Fierce Network’s Masha Abarinova and Linda Hardesty. https://lnkd.in/gN4_dMX6

This comes with a report that continues the previous conversations. Here, Verizon has decided it is going to focus on wireless -- FWA, and even attempts to include it as a 'broadband' 100% fiber optic network, service-- even though the tower can be far away; the farther away from the cell tower the worse the speed. Problem is -- the fiber appears to be funded via the state utility -- using -- wait for it -- Title II, yes, a direct contradiction to the statement "title II harms investment". and, as we wrote, Verizon NY has had a steady $1.2 billion in annual construction -- mostly diverted to wireless vs upgrading the rural areas of NY state. no state broadband agency has even mentioned the incumbent telecommunications utilities by name (like Harry Potter's "He who has no name"-- and these investment calls are now more Kabuki theater-- no one even mentioned there are still utilities or that it is the Verizon footprint-- which has been allowed to deteriorate -- and part of the history and causes of the Digital Divide-- that is not being told, creating deformed public policy drivers and decision.
Report: Verizon Tells Investors 2024 Is All about FWA Wireless, Harming the Entire East Coast…
