The International Air Transport Association (IATA)'s Comparative Review of Aviation Net Zero Co2 Transition Pathways shares some interesting findings, including " In terms of absolute emissions reductions by various mitigation options, we found that the mitigation potential of a given option is determined again by the purpose of the roadmaps". It also states that "Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is assumed to deliver the highest emissions savings in the energy transition of the aviation sector to reach net zero by 2050", ranging between 24-70% reduction, highlighting the importance of #SAF in coming years of sustainable aviation. Global efforts to stay within the 1.5°C temperature target of the Paris Agreement are off-track, and extreme weather events are more common than ever. While the aviation sector is a critical contributor to the global economy and provides important benefits enabling travel around the world, the sector is notoriously difficult to decarbonize. Most supply-side options for reducing aviation carbon emissions – such as zero-emissions aircraft and sustainable aviation fuels – are yet to be scaled and are still at the R&D phase. In the context of dwindling carbon budgets, this paper assesses the possibility of managing the demand for flights in order to set the sector on an achievable path for reaching net zero. The model developed for this paper generates different scenarios that consider the main supply-side decarbonization solutions. The assessment notes the ‘acceptable’ level of aviation demand under each scenario to remain within carbon budgets. The model demonstrates that acting prudently, and reducing demand for flights in the short term, would offer the best chance of enabling the sector to play its role in achieving net zero.

Aviation is on the brink of a dramatic transformation. For over 120 years, the industry has contributed to global greenhouse gas emissions. Now, like all other sectors, aviation is mandated to achieve carbon neutrality within the next 26 years. Despite its complexity and the high capital and operating expenses, aviation’s unmatched convenience has made it a dominant force in transporting people and goods—an essential service. However, failing to meet the carbon neutrality mandate could disrupt the entire transportation industry, jeopardizing regional connectivity and essential services worldwide. Experts from the International Council on Clean Transportation warn that the aviation industry must produce at least 10,000 zero-emission aircraft by 2043 to meet this mandate. Meanwhile, recent research reveals that the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) generates more emissions than previously estimated, further amplifying the need for true zero-emission solutions. This is where the challenge lies: the rigorous design approval processes that have made aviation the safest mode of transport are too sophisticated to swiftly approve such a large number of radically new designs. The situation is further complicated by the growing Urban Air Mobility sector, which, despite attracting significant attention and resources, does little to address the broader needs of the aviation industry. The urgent demand for a diverse range of zero-emission aircraft by the mid-2030s means that more projects must begin now. Early investment in the zero-emission aviation sector, which is poised for rapid growth, presents a unique opportunity to make a tangible difference for communities, contribute to climate restoration, and achieve a solid return on investment by joining the $500B USD per year aircraft market. CUR8 was out in force at Sustainable Skies World Summit this week, with Gabrielle Walker joining a panel on the urgency for global aviation to invest now into carbon removal. What we heard across the two days: ✈ The scale is huge. As one of the hardest sectors to decarbonise, fully 20% of global aviation’s emissions in 2050 will require durable carbon removal to meet its Net Zero commitments (which could well increase should other decarbonisation efforts under-deliver). ✈ Action is needed now. While global aviation will need 500 million tonnes of carbon removed at 2050, today total carbon removal capacity stands at just 2 million tonnes annually (i.e. shared by every economic sector). Beyond the flurry of smaller DAC purchases last year, now must be the moment for aviation to make major (co-)investment into scaling carbon removal technologies. ✈ Policy must catch up. Many aviation firms are now operating under compliance obligations for carbon, and it is now critical that rules under CORSIA and national ETS’ begin to recognise and incentivise durable carbon removal. ✈ Build on SAF. With so much progress to scale sustainable fuels — and clear opportunities for carbon removal to support production of ‘clean’ SAF, plus as a feedstock — aviation leaders are primed to take a leading role across sectors to scale the carbon removal industry (especially via early offtakes).
