👩⚕️ 💪 🌷 Daily Dose of Health Insights August 4 👩⚕️ 💪 🌷 🔹 Today's Highlight: New incubator supercharging women-focused health startups in Canada "Rachel Bartholomew, CEO of Hyivy Health, faced outright disbelief when pitching her groundbreaking vaginal dilator, “Floora,” a device that combines auto-dilation and heat therapy to revolutionize pelvic floor health. Despite its innovative design, investors often dismissed her pitch, reflecting a wider issue in the field of women's health. Women-led startups, particularly in Femtech, face daunting funding hurdles. Only 4% of Canadian venture capital and even less in the U.S. and Europe supports women-founded ventures. To combat this, Bartholomew launched Femtech Canada, a powerful network of over 120 companies dedicated to women's health. The market potential for conditions like endometriosis, which impacts millions, is staggering—up to $250 billion globally. Yet, funding lags far behind conditions like erectile dysfunction. Bartholomew fights to shift the narrative and push for recognition of the crucial, often overlooked, economic and health impacts of women’s health issues. Dr. Joss Reimer from the CMA highlights the ongoing struggle for gender equity in healthcare, reminding us that women's health research was only mandated in the 1990s. Bartholomew’s work is a crucial step toward balancing this inequity." 🔎 Why Stay Updated? In the rapidly evolving field of healthcare, staying informed is crucial. New year, new milestones! 🎉 We’re starting 2024 on a high note with Biorithm's recent US$3.5 million Series A raise, co-led by SEEDS Capital alongside Adaptive Capital Partners. The funds will propel the company’s expansion into Southeast Asia and the United States while supporting research to expand Biorithm's product offerings. ✈️ Founded in 2014, the medical technology startup uses predictive and precision medical technology to prevent pregnancy complications and stillbirths. Their solution, FeMom, integrates digital health, advanced sensors, and data science for remote obstetric monitoring, offering clinicians insights into maternal and fetal health while providing expecting mothers convenient access to healthcare and pregnancy information. Having successfully completed clinical trials with healthcare institutions in Singapore and the UK, Biorithm is set to broaden its clinical trial reach to other markets such as the US. 🩺 “We are excited to continue backing Biorithm as they accelerate their commercialisation in the US and support their vision of revolutionising the global maternal health market,” said Kaixin Tan, general manager of Seeds Capital. #funding #venturecapital #startup #fundraising #biomedical #healthcare #medtech

MedtechWOMEN invites you to join us next week for the second episode of MedtechFORUM: Women's Health in 2024 and Beyond, moderated by Marga Ortigas-Wedekind, Chief Commercial Strategy Officer, Fogarty Innovation. The increased attention on innovations in women's health, often encapsulated under the term "FemTech," has indeed generated significant buzz in recent years. However, it's essential to critically evaluate whether the level of invention and investment has truly aligned with the unmet needs in this space. First, let's redefine "Women's Health." While reproductive health and women's cancers have received significant attention, there's a vast landscape of health issues that affect women differently or disproportionately. Diseases like cardiovascular conditions, depression, and endometriosis often go underdiagnosed or undertreated. Additionally, medical issues such as osteoporosis impact women at various stages of their lives. To truly address women's health needs, innovation must extend beyond traditional focuses. For investors in this space, raising high-quality funds using traditional venture models has been a challenge. Data is scarce, making it difficult to quantify returns, and with only 15% of women venture capitalists in decision-making roles,1 old biases still drive investment choices. The result is that FemTech represents only 2-4%2 of all health tech and biopharma investments. Join our panel of women entrepreneurs and investors as we grapple with these challenges. We'll examine the headwinds and tailwinds affecting women's health today and explore what the medtech ecosystem must do better to support the issues faced by 50% of the world's population. Together, let's pave the way for innovation that truly meets the diverse and evolving needs of women worldwide. Date: Wednesday, May 22 Time: 11:30am PT - In Person Arrival at Fogarty Innovation & Lunch 12:00-1:00pm PT - Virtual Event Begins Location: Fogarty Innovation 2495 Hospital Drive, Suite 300 Mountain View, CA Moderator: Marga Ortigas-Wedekind, Chief Commercial Strategy Officer, Fogarty Innovation Panelists: Amelia Degenkolb - CEO & Co-Founder, Novocuff, Inc. Andrea Olariu - Chief Executive Officer, Medicines360 Laura Yecies - CEO & Board Director, Bone Health Technologies Tracy Dooley MD - Partner, Avestria Ventures Cost: $20 registration fee with 50% of the proceeds from this webinar going to the Magee-Womens Research Institute & Foundation. 🚀 Women’s health innovation faces a funding crisis. How can we change that? Despite exciting advancements, resource availability remains a major bottleneck for innovators in women’s health. Limited #funding during critical development stages forces many solutions into the "valley of death," where they fail to secure the support needed for clinical validation and commercialization. This is where new approaches can make a huge difference: 💡 Solutions: - Create a multi-billion-dollar fund aimed at bridging this gap by offering US$20-50M grants to accelerate early-stage R&D and clinical validation. Such funding can foster high-risk, high-reward research and provide women-focused startups with essential backing to develop products that address unmet needs in healthcare. - Tax incentive programs like those in Maryland and the UK can also encourage venture capitalists and angel investors to support women’s health startups. - Fund of Funds initiatives could diversify venture capital and focus on supporting female founders and underrepresented investors in the FemTech space. This strategic funding will be crucial in transforming the valley of death into a valley of birth for breakthrough innovations in women’s #health. #femtech #7mountainsmedtech Source: https://lnkd.in/g5RC6DRj
