FIFA has issued new guidelines to all teams at the Olympic Football Tournaments Paris 2024, stating that only captains will be permitted to approach referees in certain situations.   Going forward this is also to be encouraged by FIFA in all competitions around the world, from the elite level of football down. FIFA President Gianni Infantino said: “Without referees there is no football. Protecting match officials and ensuring they are treated with respect is fundamental for the future of the game. Implementing measures such as “captain only” is crucial in maintaining the spirit of football and safeguarding those who uphold its laws.”   Chairman of the FIFA Referees Committee, Pierluigi Collina, said: “This is an important step based on the overarching idea of further enhancing fairness and respect in football while enabling an open line of dialogue between the referee and the teams. As we have seen in the past, measures that are in defence of football end up being accepted.”    You can read more about the new guidelines here: https://lnkd.in/e5YjjF6b

The coaches should be allow to ask for VAR whenever they want 1 time each period (like tennis or basket). Referees still have too much power and the laws lot of time are not 100% clear (ask Germany about Spain hand during the the Eurocup...)

FIFA should be looking at the women’s Euros as a consistent model for the men’s games. What do I mean by that? Every decision where the referees looked at VAR or made critical decisions on the pitch they did so through their headsets. By briefing to all the teams, coaching staff and the public, it allowed everyone to understand and process those decisions. It worked extremely well and we all thought this was something that would be rolled out during the men’s euros. Shambolic decisions and very poor execution of refereeing I think over the summer. Look at rugby and how well those games are run? Honestly FIFA, you really don’t apply any logic to those decisions?

Thrilled to see the implementation of this practice. However, the issue will be the first discipline handed down by the referee for the approach. The global game continues to grow and we need the referee talent to continue to grow as well. It is a tough and thankless role at times. But I hate it when referees are mobbed by players - pleading their case or arguing the call which can only result in a disciplinary action and no call overturn. Rugby has certainly set a pinnacle for athlete/referee interaction of respect and I believe FIFA is taking this proactive step to set a new standard! Kudos!

“Without referees there is no football.” Really? In which distorted world are you trapped? This sentence shows all your intentions to control the game in favour of your personal, political or financial interests.

Limiting referee interactions to team captains is a commendable step towards enhancing respect and fairness in the game. This measure will undoubtedly foster a more positive and respectful atmosphere on the field, benefiting players and referees alike.

I second this decision, it’s so bad for the business seeing players crowding the referee when pleading their case. It shows lack of discipline for me.

Excellent decision. It should be this way all the time, in all leagues and matches. It's extremely intimidating to have multiple players rush up on a referee arguing/emotionally charged. Let the Captain do his/her job. And allow the referee to do his/hers without fear and intimidation.

I’ve never seen “fairness” and FIFA in the same sentence before
