Looking forward to presenting "Predicting Post-Wildfire Effects and Risks Around Reservoirs in a Changing Climate" at #ASDSO in Denver this week. I have been working on this research for over a year and a half. The presentation abstract is below: In recent decades, wildfires have increased in size, frequency, and severity, which has subsequently increased the hazards of post-fire erosion, runoff, and debris flows. Published climate studies expect wildfires to continue increasing in size, frequency, and severity. Additionally, under climate change scenarios, rainstorm events are expected to increase in intensity. As wildfires increase, the interaction between burned watersheds and reservoirs are also likely to increase. This paper proposes a conservative, practical methodology to model potential post-fire erosion, watershed response, and debris flow responses. These methodologies can be used to model current conditions, projected 25-year conditions (2050), and projected 50-year conditions (2075). The projected conditions will account for climate changes in design storms and burn severity under the Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 and RCP 8.5 scenarios. This methodology uses state-of-practice modeling techniques used by the U.S. Geological Survey, current published literature research, and my own thesis research to project climate changes onto a design fire that is used to estimate potential post-fire responses around reservoirs. To demonstrate these methodologies, post-fire responses were modeled around Comanche and Hourglass Reservoirs. Both reservoirs, located in the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forest, Colorado, are considered high hazard potential dams. A total of 85 debris-flow basins were generated, each with estimated likelihoods, volumes, hazards, and inundations. Results indicate that several basins would likely contribute debris-flows directly into both reservoirs, which would impact water storage volume and quality. The modeling results also show a potential for post-fire debris flows to impact and impede operations at Comanche Dam. The post-fire erosion response shows increased deposition under climate change and highlights the largest contributing areas of sediment, which would impact water quality and storage volume in the reservoir. The post-fire watershed hydraulic basin responses show increases in runoff under climate change, as well as decreased runoff concentration times and higher peak runoffs. Modeling the potential post-fire hydraulic basin responses, erosion responses, and debris flow responses can provide information to help reservoir owners improve dam safety and protect water quality in the event of a wildfire. The results of these analyses can also be used to provide first-order estimates for dam owners, dam safety engineers, and emergency responders to help guide decisions immediately after a fire ignites near a reservoir.
Stop by and visit with W. W. Wheeler & Associates, Inc. at Exhibit Booth 307 during our hometown Association of State Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO) Dam Safety Conference in Denver. Today’s Firehouse Training class focused on tactical ventilation and fire dynamics while on the Ottawa / Quebec border!💨 We discussed the importance of understanding airflow and controlling smoke movement during a structure fire. One of the key tools we covered was the use of a positive pressure fan (PPV). These fans can be a game changer in rapidly clearing smoke and heat, improving visibility, and creating safer conditions for firefighters and trapped occupants. Remember, effective ventilation with PPV can drastically enhance fireground operations! Let’s keep training and mastering these life-saving tactics!🔥 #FirehouseTraining #TacticalVentilation #FirefighterSkills #TrainHard

I had the pleasure of attending the recent PSSA - Perimeter Security Suppliers Association event and thoroughly enjoyed meeting with my fellow council board members ahead of the Interact Day with Russ Phillips. The event featured a full agenda of interesting and engaging presentations from industry peers, including: - Jonathan Farley at Arup - Discussed advanced simulation techniques to model impacts of threat vehicles and provide estimations of the performance of protective design solutions. - Paul Everington BSc(Hons), CEng, FIET at Wiltshire Ballistics Services ltd - Covered the integration of ballistic ratings with HVM applications. - An informative update from the National Protective Security Authority (NPSA) - This spurred engaging conversations around industry best practices. - Alistair Crooks HORIBA MIRA - Shared insights on HVM crash test changes and their evolution around the new ISO standard ISO 22343-1:2023 We were privileged to be joined by Figen Murray OBE, who provided updates on the progress of #MartynsLaw and expectations for the coming year. A big thank you to Paul Jeffrey, Chairman of the PSSA, for organising such a valuable event. Here's to a positive year ahead, where the industry continues to come together in collaboration and support, sharing best practice ideas and maintaining our collective passion for public safety. #Security #PSSA #PublicSafety #Collaboration #HVM #IndustryBestPractices #MartynsLaw #ISO22343 #Ballistics #SimulationTechniques #LPS1175 #PerimeterSecurity
