Here’s the latest in our Olymponomics series!
How much is a Paris Olympic gold medal worth? We estimate that the value of each gold medal during the Paris Olympics is more than a thousand USD – specifically US$1,027 – while silver and bronze medals are worth US$535 and US$4.6, respectively, excluding the value of the Eiffel Tower piece of iron in the centre. By the next two Olympics, these gold medals will be worth considerably more. Read more in our latest blog: https://okt.to/k625xz This value estimation is backed by our Global Commodity Service. How much is a Paris Olympic gold medal worth? 🥇 Oxford Economics estimates that value is USD 1,027. A neat and timely illustration of their commodity expertise, but it got me thinking. It’s a great example of how data alone without insight can fail to provide the full picture. I suspect there are a lot of Chinese people and sports fans who would value Pan Zhanle’s gold in the 100m freestyle in a new world record time much higher, and how many people (particularly those rightly very proud in the host nation) would value Leon Marchand’s haul in the pool much higher than USD 1,027 each? Two golds in the space of a few hours in new Olympic record times… never been done before. The champions we see in the Olympics are there following years of unseen training, and dedication to achieve their goals. Some of the sporting excellence to date has been breathtaking to watch. Whether you’re most interested in Simone Biles in gymnastics, or amazing finishes like those from Alex Yee in the men’s Triathlon, or Tom Pidcock in the mountain biking, all are worth so much more than the sum of the metals used to create the gold medals around their necks. 🥇 #data #insight #excellence #value

Did you know? The Olympic Rings were created in 1913 by Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympic Games. They represent the union of the five inhabited continents namely Africa, America, Asia, Europe and Oceania. The colors, along with the white background of the Olympic flag, were chosen because at least one of these colors appears on all the national flags of the world. The meaning is said to be: "Blue" ring: represents Europe. "Yellow" ring: represents Asia. "Black" ring: means Africa. "Green" ring: represents Oceania. "Red" ring: symbolizes America.

Ever wondered how the Olympic torch is lit? 🤔 It’s often done using LPG (liquefied petroleum gas)! LPG’s reliability and ease of use makes it the perfect choice for safely and efficiently igniting the flame, symbolizing the spirit of the Olympic Games. Beyond its practical considerations, the use of LPG in lighting the Olympic torch holds profound symbolic significance. The flame represents the enduring spirit of the Olympic Games – a beacon of hope, unity, and athletic excellence. By using LPG, organizers honor the traditions of the past while embracing the innovations of the present, reflecting the values of inclusivity, sustainability, and progress. #Merciport
