Common clown fish, (Amphiprion ocellaris) group consists of a breeding pair and none to four nonbreeding fish. Each group has a size-based hierarchy: the female is the largest, the breeding male is the second largest, and the non-breeding males get progressively smaller as the hierarchy descends. These fish exhibit protandry, meaning they are born male and change to female if the sole breeding female dies. Furthermore, if the female dies, the breeding male becomes the breeding female, and the largest nonbreeder becomes the breeding male.

The Spey Fishery Board hatchery is currently a hub of activity, playing a crucial role in the preservation of Spey Atlantic salmon. In this video, you can see our team carefully washing off the sediment that coats the eggs in our hex trays, each capable of holding up to 100,000 eggs. Our hatchery manager and bailiffs, who are all experienced hatchery operators, clean the Atlantic salmon eggs in our hatchery at least once a week. Silt and sediment pose a significant threat to our eggs. This fine film of silt, if left unattended, can starve the eggs of oxygen. Therefore, it is essential to wash the eggs weekly to remove this sediment, ensuring the optimal health and development of these precious salmon embryos. This process, requiring patience and a steady hand, is critical not only for the immediate health of the eggs but also for their future. By gently cleaning the eggs, we promote higher survival rates and foster the healthier development of the salmon, preparing them for planting out into the rivers next month.
