I was at Swan Hunter in 1989. I saw tumbleweed, and empty workshops, but at the same time, a brand new 'Sir Eric Sharp' newbuild waiting to be delivered. The contrast was stark. The decline was inevitable when Japan, then Korean yards benefited from a number of factors, including, and I think we need to remember this, UK help. A&P and Scott Lithgow advised Hyundai on shipyard layout, providing ship designs, production methods, and personnel to train the South Korea shipyard workers. Senior management in Scott Lithgow in defence saying that if they did not do it someone else would, and they knowingly were contributing to their own UK shipyard demise. The recent UK NSO National Shipbuilding Strategy has an ambitious plan for UK shipbuilding and skills gaps, but for that, it needs a 30 year forward order book, which will primarily be defence work, to gain momentum, confidence and avoid 'the 'boom and bust' of grass getting a foothold, and workers and skills getting other jobs elsewhere. The commercial shipbuilding orderbook targets are as yet, not market assessed. These comments from Michael Grey are food for thought on the realities of that. It may be too late for some ship types to ever be built in UK again.

Happy to share Michael Grey's insightful recent article on the Shipbuilding Industry in UK. Michael Grey Published on:  28 Jun 2024, It was at least forty years ago that the late Derek Kimber, one of the UK’s few successful shipbuilders at the time, observed that, “Once the grass has grown on a shipyard building berth, it is very unlikely to ever open again.” And it was a prophetic remark, with the UK and indeed much of Europe’s shipbuilding industry, being in free fall, with both sharply reduced demand and an inability to compete with the thrusting shipbuilders of the Far East. The first of four ferries being built in Turkey for Scotland's west coast routes will be launched on 16 March, ferry owner CMAL has announced. The MV Isle of Islay is then scheduled to arrive in Scotland in October this year and will serve Islay and Jura. The four ferries for CalMac routes are being built at the Cemre Marin Endustri shipyard in Yalovan. The work comes amidst continued frustration among island communities at the state of west coast services. Two late and over-budget ferries being built at the nationalised Ferguson Marine yard in Inverclyde, which were due to launch this spring, could face a further two-month delay. The Glen Sannox and Glen Rosa now have a price tag of at least £360m - compared to an initial estimate of £97m - for their construction at the yard in Port Glasgow.
