The interesting story of Abscisic acid discovery👇🏻 Cotton plants naturally shed (absciss) most of their young fruits. This interested researchers and growers who wanted to improve fruit yield. 📃 In the 1960s, a team of researchers at the University of California, Davis, led by Frederick Addicott, stumbled upon a surprising discovery while studying the curious case of cotton shedding its young fruits. They were looking for a growth hormone that might be involved in this process, but instead, they found an inhibitor. This mysterious compound not only stopped growth but also triggered the very process they were investigating - fruit abscission. 🌾 Initially dubbed "abscisin II" for being the second player identified in the abscission, the compound was later christened "abscisic acid" (ABA) due to its acidic nature and its wider influence beyond just fruit shedding.  🌱 Soon after, scientists observed a fascinating connection: wilting plants had a surge in ABA levels, and ABA caused tiny openings on leaves (stomata) to close. This double act highlighted ABA's role as a stress mediator, helping plants conserve water during droughts. 🍃 The story doesn't end there. ABA also turned out to be a key player in preparing seeds for survival, promoting the accumulation of nutrients and making them tolerant of dry conditions. Global Agricultural Development Corporation, thanks for this valuable information!  I think it is necessary that all companies and researchers working in the area of biological product development should be aware of it in order to develop products that truly contribute to encourage the use of such products by farmers.  As accurate, direct and clear as ever, Pam Marrone describes the most important current issues in the industry.  I don't foresee any way we can move forward without addressing these truths.

A recent article in AgFunderNews (AgFunder), featuring reporting from last month’s Salinas Biological Summit, has been making the rounds in the Global Ag offices. The report quotes Pam Marrone from her opening address at this conference. Dr. Marrone reflects on her industry experience, and observes many challenges in the development of new biological ag products: “… what is underestimated is how hard it is to go through the commercial development process, scale up, get the efficacy, get the shelf life, get the field life, [determine] what kind of formulation out there doesn’t work as well as chemicals… etc.” The challenges she describes are exactly the areas where Global Ag can help in new product development. As our founder, Fate Thompson, says “If a grower can’t see the difference in the field, they aren’t going to pay for it.” This on-the-ground agronomic perspective is missing in some new product approaches. With Global Ag assisting in the product development, these important real-world factors are integrated into the plan.
