Someone with children who could use free clothing, has entered the chat: While it's commendable that 18,000 children received a season of clothing, it's equally disheartening that so many are in need—and surely, another 18,000 children could use similar assistance. I've said it before: parents need livable wages, hours that allow them to care for and build relationships with their children, and safe neighborhoods. In the words of Al Bundy, “You can’t have one without the other!” The crime in our community is directly linked to poverty, which stems from a lack of advancement and opportunity for marginalized individuals. This cycle repeats as parents are overworked, underpaid, and stressed in a constant struggle for survival. We need career opportunities as holiday charity. Instead of toy trucks, we need career opportunities for Giving Tuesdays, rather than endless roundtable discussions about recurring problems. A career is the gift that keeps on giving. A promotion that recognizes those of us who have invested time in acquiring new skills and have spent years developing transferable skills can make a world of difference. For many families, ending poverty is just one job offer away.

While we will still be taking emergency applications for unhoused families, the Red Cross, CHOICES, etc. the Charity Newsies general assistance application is now closed. Three years and prior, we were able to keep the clothing assistance application open into December to serve up to 15,000 children. Two years ago, we reached our budgetary goal of 15,000 children right before Thanksgiving. Last year, we reached 15,000 on August 15 before Columbus City Schools even opened. We scrambled and raised money and bought clothes to reach 18,000, which we did on September 18. This year, we opened on July 29 planning to serve 18,000 children. As of 9:38 a.m. morning, August 15, 18 days since opening the application, we have hit our budgeted amount of 18,000 children scheduled to receive clothing or who have already picked up clothing.

🏘 Cuts to early intervention services have doubled the number of children in residential care from 2011 to 2023. 🚧 💸 "The report [created by 5 children's charities] found that since 2010/11 the amount councils in England spent on early intervention services almost halved – from £4bn to £2.2bn in 2022/23." ⚠️ "But the report says this increase in expenditure “is not leading to improved outcomes for the children and families the system support”. #EarlyIntervention #ChildrensServices #ChildrensCharity #YouthJustice #ResidentialCare #ChildProtection

I’m not sure if my 6-year-old nephew fully understands the concept of charity and giving, although he did say he has $16 to give to ‘the poor people who don’t have anything’. I do think it’s up to parents and adults, at a household level, to educate children about the concept of charity. Really important and continuing conversation regarding the impact of unrestricted funding being carried out in this series of reports. Unrestricted funding is not just crucial for the survival of organisations in the social sector but also for our ability - as funders - to live up to our own missions and deliver change as quickly as we can. Our job - if we take it seriously - is to help reimagine and create a world so beautiful that our very jobs become unnecessary. Unrestricted funding to organisations with the vision, passion, and focus to lead the way, a crucial tool to get us there.
🆕 Under the bonnet of unrestricted funding with The Bromley Trust. Director of the Trust, Laura Roling, shares why they decided to embrace flexible funding in this way, seeing it as a 'vital way to help charities to navigate challenging times and develop new ways of meeting people's needs.' We also hear from grantees and charity leaders, Naomi Delap and Penny Parker. They explain what unrestricted funding allows their organisations to do and give words of advice to other funders, including thinking of longer-term change and ‘the bigger picture.’ Do any of their experiences and perspectives ring true to you? 🤔 🔗 Read the case study: buff.ly/3Pmu2O4

Peers highlights TDS Charity Foundation's "My Housing Issue Gateway" during second debate on the Renters (Reform) Bill in House of Lords. Baroness Warwick said "The TDS Charitable Foundation’s survey work raises serious concerns about the ability of tenants to enforce the new rights that the Bill will give them. It is developing a new “My Housing Issue” gateway or portal, to which the noble Lord, Lord Best, referred, which will act as a signposting service".
