Further developments in advanced materials R&D suggest the emergence of disruptive technologies which may challenge the current domination of lithium-ion as the key ingredient of batteries. A new roadmap plots development trajectories for solid-state batteries as a safer, higher-energy successor to today's lithium-ion batteries. Hybrid solid electrolyte systems may well emerge as a promising strategy for advancing battery technology and optimising energy storage solutions.
