It's disheartening to witness the stigma attached to cancer, as highlighted in the BBC article. With statistics showing that 1 in 2 of us will face cancer in our lifetime, it's crucial to shatter the silence and confront the issue head-on. No one should be blamed for their diagnosis; cancer doesn't discriminate. Let's channel our emotions of anger and sadness into productive action. Instead of allowing pride and arrogance to hinder discussions about cancer, let's foster empathy and compassion. Let's not use strange methods to raise awareness about cancer (iykyk) .. Instead, let's focus on what we can really do- getting regular check-ups, living healthy lives, and supporting those who are fighting cancer. Having witnessed its intensity firsthand, I'm reminded of the importance of coming together to tackle this challenge head-on. You cannot fathom the pain one experiences upon witnessing a 2-year-old angel battling cancer. Today is World Cancer Day, a time to reflect on the global impact of this devastating disease. In 2020 alone, over 18 million people were diagnosed with cancer, and it claimed nearly 10 million lives worldwide, which is the last time such statistics were gathered, according to the World Health Organization. Amidst these alarming statistics, let's join hands and raise awareness for the ongoing battle against cancer. Snowdrop Foundation is making a difference by supporting those in the fight, offering hope and funding childhood cancer research and College Scholarships to those affected. For anyone local to Geneva, Cancer Support Switzerland (formerly ESCA - English Speaking Cancer Association) and Palliative Geneve are co-hosting a short evening session in English on 25th April called Death Cafe. It will be facilitated by me ;) How is a Death Cafe different to the “Let’s Talk About Death Over Dinner?” soirees I host? Death Cafe is “agenda-less” - all content is brought by the participants. For the dinners I bring a bit of process and some questions. Death Cafe is fully about whatever people choose to bring. If you’re already an adept enquirer into all things Mortality, then this session is not necessarily for you. I’d say it’s more for people who are just tentatively exploring what it means to be mortal, what it means to lean into one’s mortality. International Childhood Cancer Day serves as a worldwide initiative aimed at boosting awareness of childhood cancer and showing solidarity with children, adolescents, survivors, and their families. Annually, over 400,000 children and adolescents under 20 receive a cancer diagnosis. Survival rates vary by region, with about 80% in most High-Income Countries but dropping to as low as 20% in Low and Middle-Income Countries. The WHO Global Childhood Cancer Initiative sets a goal to eradicate suffering for children battling cancer and attain at least a 60% survival rate for all diagnosed children globally by 2030. From 2022 to 2024, World Cancer Day's focus is on "Closing the cancer gap," highlighting disparities in cancer care worldwide.
