It's disheartening to witness the stigma attached to cancer, as highlighted in the BBC article. With statistics showing that 1 in 2 of us will face cancer in our lifetime, it's crucial to shatter the silence and confront the issue head-on. No one should be blamed for their diagnosis; cancer doesn't discriminate. Let's channel our emotions of anger and sadness into productive action. Instead of allowing pride and arrogance to hinder discussions about cancer, let's foster empathy and compassion. Open dialogue and early screening are essential steps in raising awareness and supporting one another. Together, we can break the taboo surrounding cancer. #Time2Talk #TabooNoMore" https://lnkd.in/eUYjVXTB #CulturallyBetterTogether Cancer Research UK (CRUK) South Asian Heritage Month NHS Buckinghamshire Oxfordshire and Berkshire West Integrated Care Board Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust

Today, the American Cancer Society released their 2024 #cancer statistics. Lots to discuss and this is all publicly available but I go through top points here. Some takeaways: 🚨Over 2 million new cases of cancer estimated in US in 2024 with approximately 611,700 deaths. 🔸Incidence is rising in people younger than 50. 🎀 #breastcancer is leading cause of cancer death in women ages 20-49. Colorectal cancer is second leading cause of cancer death in women <50 - breaks down to: #cervicalcancer is #2 in women ages 20-39 and colorectal cancer is #2 in women ages 40-49. #colorectalcancer is now the leading cause of cancer death in men <50. 🔸 Significant racial disparities persist. One striking point in the report is that Black women have a 2x higher risk of death from endometrial cancer compared to white women. What can we do? ⭐️Get your age appropriate cancer screening and preventive health care 🥦Eat more plants and less 🥓 and drink less 🍷 👟Exercise ⁉️How much does environment play a role? We clearly need more research here. Let me know what questions you have!

We have seen a 44% increase in people attending our cancer support groups for young people over the last three years. This increase highlights the psychological and emotional impact cancer has on younger generations. Laura Lee (DBE) Chief Executive of Maggie’s says: “Having cancer can be a lonely experience, and for many young people, knowing that someone else is going through something similar can be hugely helpful. “We hope that sharing these stories will increase understanding of what it is like to have cancer at a younger age, and will encourage people who need support to get it. “With the increase in the number of younger people living with cancer, there has been a rise in demand for psychological support, and often, younger people face different challenges to older people living with cancer. “We want to highlight that support is there for young people too, and that there is a good chance that they will get back to lead fulfilling and productive lives after treatment.” Read more about the increased need for psychological support for young people with cancer here: https://lnkd.in/eKm4vBQv

International Childhood Cancer Day is a global collaborative campaign to raise awareness about childhood cancer, and to express support for children and adolescents with cancer, the survivors and their families. In Canada: - About 1 in 5 children will not survive cancer and outcomes worsen for hard-to-cure cancers. - It is the #1 cause of death by disease of Canadian children. - More than 10,000 children, adolescents, and young adults in Canada are in treatment or 5-year follow-up for cancer right now. - Only 7% of all cancer research dollars are dedicated to childhood cancer. - 95% of survivors will live with a chronic health problem by the time they are 45 years old. Anyone who has undergone cancer treatment is at a lifelong risk of developing lymphedema. Inspiring people to live joyfully in the moment. Ongoing drug trial lung cancer patient, solution thinker, and grateful gritty soul. Life is too short to waste time with chasing things you don’t need.
Happy International Women's Day! Did you know that globally, women are leading in developing non-smoking lung cancer? This alarming trend has more than doubled in the last decade, with over 225k people diagnosed yearly with terminal lung cancer. Shockingly, more than 54% of those affected are women between the ages of 34-65, And it's becoming increasingly common among younger women under 30. On this special day, let's take a moment to prioritize our health and well-being. Please consider setting up a lung cancer screening exam and testing, and urge all the women in your life to do the same. Let's make sure we are screening for all types of cancer, especially the deadly silent ones that take our women’s breath away. #InternationalWomensDay #LungCancerAwareness

World cancer day - Feb 4 "CLOSE THE CARE GAP - Everyone deserves access to cancer care" ‘Close the Care Gap’ campaign was all about understanding and recognising the inequities in cancer care around the globe. It’s about having an open mind, challenging assumptions and looking at the hard facts: - Inequity in cancer care costs lives. - People who seek cancer care hit barriers at every turn. - Income, education, location and discrimination based on ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability and lifestyle are just a few of the factors that can negatively affect care. - The gap affects everyone, including you and your loved ones. These barriers are not set in stone. They can be changed. #cancer #cancercare #cancerawareness #cancerscreening #closethecaregap #oncology #feb4 #worldcancerday

Cancer diagnoses have ricocheted their way through our communities for years and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. is committed to the education and preventive care of all cancers globally. Extraordinary women do ordinary things consistently and taking care of ourselves and our communities’ health continues to top our list of priorities. According to the World Health Organization, Lung Cancer is the most commonly occurring cancer worldwide with 2.5 million new cases; Female Breast Cancer ranks second (2.3 million cases, 11.6%), followed by Colorectal Cancer (1.9 million cases, 9.6%), Prostate Cancer (1.5 million cases, 7.3%), and Stomach Cancer (970 000 cases, 4.9%). Unfortunately, for most types of cancer, Black people have the highest death rate and shortest survival of any racial/ethnic group in the United States. Black women are 41% more likely to die from breast cancer than White women. Sisters, as we honor our past, and shape our future during Black History Month, we encourage you to partner with your communities to educate and advocate for health equity and preventive care for all cancer diagnoses. By uniting together, change can happen if we want it to. #ZPhiB #zetaphibeta #bhm #blackhistorymonth #embracetheextraordinary #honoringthepast #shapingthefuture #worldcancerday2024 #ExtraordinaryPowerOfSHE

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month Did you know that only 4% of federal cancer research funding goes toward studying childhood cancers? This means that children facing cancer often receive treatments that are decades old, originally designed for adults, not kids. More than 15,000 children in the U.S. are diagnosed with cancer each year. While treatment advances have improved survival rates, many children still endure outdated chemotherapy drugs with devastating side effects. Over 60% of childhood cancer survivors suffer from long-term side effects due to the harsh nature of these treatments, impacting their health well into adulthood. We can do better. This Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we’re calling for more research, more funding, and more life-saving treatments designed specifically for kids. Every child deserves a chance to survive and thrive. #ChildhoodCancerAwareness #MoreThan4 #KidsDeserveMore #GoldStrong

Yarning about Cancer. #NationalReconciliationWeek Responding to the unmet needs of First Peoples with cancer was the focus of the third day of BCNA’s annual consumer Think Tank in late March. Aboriginal woman from Townsville and BCNA board member Jacinta Elston and proud Yorta Yorta Elder Aunty Pam hosted a storytelling session on addressing cancer inequity in Indigenous communities. During National Reconciliation Week, BCNA reaffirms its commitment to improving outcomes for First Peoples affected by breast cancer. This is a key priority in Australia’s first national cancer plan, launched last year. "The biggest issue that we now have is that cancer has become the leading cause of death for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people," Jacinta said. "It's taken over the other chronic diseases that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have been struggling with."
