Happy Kwanzaa! Today is the first day of Kwanzaa and it's been a tradition my family has celebrated for as long as I can remember. Growing up I didn't celebrate Christmas so while all my friends opened their Christmas presents, I knew that I had the end of Kwanzaa to look forward to. Kwanzaa is celebrated over 7 days starting on 12/26 and ending on 1/1. Each day is themed and has a meaning. Today is Umoja! Umoja means unity. Today I reflect on the principle of unity that allows us to take different approaches to a common goal. I see so many educators discussing different approaches to achieving financial empowerment or financial freedom within personal finance that sometimes feels like we are competing with one another based on : * The credentials or designations we carry * Our lived vs learned experiences * Who our target audience is * Etc. We are all working towards a more informed and financially educated population and there is enough room for all of us! We also don't have to wear every hat to serve our audiences. Referrals are a great way to grow community and enhance credibility. What are ways you reflect on "Unity" within your audience and community? #Kwanzaa #Unity #Umoja #financialfreedom

Something new I stumbled upon today, Kwanzaa! One subtle and yet significant event in December caalled Kwanzaa is the annual celebration of African-American culture from December 26 to January 1, culminating in a communal feast called Karamu, usually on the sixth day. It's all about looking inwards and contemplating on the theme of each day :) Each of the seven days of Kwanzaa is dedicated to one of the principles, as follows: 1. Umoja (Unity): To strive for and to maintain unity in the family, community, nation, and race. 2. Kujichagulia (Self-determination): To define and name ourselves, as well as to create and speak for ourselves. 3. Ujima (Collective work and responsibility): To build and maintain our community together and make our brothers' and sisters' problems our problems and to solve them together. 4. Ujamaa (Cooperative economics): To build and maintain our own stores, shops, and other businesses and to profit from them together. 5. Nia (Purpose): To make our collective vocation the building and developing of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness. 6. Kuumba (Creativity): To do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it. 7. Imani (Faith): To believe with all our hearts in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders, and the righteousness and victory of our struggle. Such a rich culture and so much to learn from the principles, isn't it? Wah Kwanzaa! #newlearnings

Kwanzaa Celebration Day 4: Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics) 🌍 Happy Day 4 of Kwanzaa! Today, let's explore Ujamaa, a principle that encourages us to support and uplift our local economies and communities. ♥️Ujamaa is a principle I've come to appreciate deeply. Living in the suburbs, I've been privileged to have easy access to local businesses. In my adulthood, I've committed to utilizing a local business at least once a month, an effort to keep money flowing within my city. 👥From getting a haircut at the local barber school to scheduling sessions with a high school friend who's now a massage therapist, and frequenting the farmers market during seasonal sales, these actions are my way of contributing to and strengthening my community. It's more than just transactions; it’s about building relationships and trust. These moments of support allow me to network and establish a rapport with business owners, showing them they can count on people like me, especially when convenience isn't the primary concern. Remember, you can't drop ship local loyalty! 🤔How do you practice Ujamaa in your life? Share your experiences of supporting local businesses and how it's impacted you and your community. 🎉As we celebrate Kwanzaa, let’s remember the importance of Ujamaa in our daily lives. Stay tuned for tomorrow’s focus on Nia (Purpose)! #Kwanzaa #Ujamaa #SupportLocal #CommunityEconomics #BuildingCommunities #LocalBusinesses (PHOTO IS MY FRIEND GROUP AT THE LOCAL GOTH CLUB!!!)
