The decision yesterday to reduce the orange roughy catch limit falls short of real protection. The government’s move to cut the Tasman Sea orange roughy catch limit by 57% is being called the bare minimum by environmentalists who want to see bottom trawling banned on seamounts to allow these deep-sea fish to recover. 🔊 Karli Thomas, DSCC spokesperson and Oceans Advisor for Tāngaro Tuia te Ora and, said: “The cut is just enough to stop further decline, but not enough to let the stock recover. Bottom trawling continues to destroy seamounts that orange roughy and other deep-sea creatures depend on.” Despite being able to live over 200 years, orange roughy stocks are well below sustainable levels. This Tasman Sea fishery is in trouble, with outdated data used to set catch limits and no action on the destructive trawling of seamounts where orange roughy breed. All eyes are now on the upcoming international meeting SPRFMO where New Zealand will have to explain how we’re managing our fisheries, and why we’re lagging behind when it comes to protecting deep-sea ecosystems. It’s time for real change to protect our oceans, and the precious life that calls them home. https://lnkd.in/gvPr2bt8

Fishermen Decry Lack of Storage Facilities Fishermen in Migori County are facing significant challenges that hinder their ability to access international markets. Among the primary issues are the lack of proper storage facilities and modern fishing techniques, which impede their efforts to maintain high-quality fish standards required by both local and global markets. The current fish stock shortage in Lake Victoria exacerbates their problems. Additionally, fishermen frequently face arrests and harassment by Ugandan and Tanzanian authorities over alleged trespassing offenses. Middlemen also exploit the situation, further diminishing the fishermen’s earnings. Fishermen from the Lake Victoria beaches of Muhuru, Aneko, Sori, and Migingo have voiced concerns over the stringent consumer requirements set by the European Union (EU). These standards, which mandate modern fishing and post-harvest techniques, have contributed to a significant decline in fish production from the region. “Requirements for high-quality fish at both local and world markets and access to storage facilities are locking out most fishermen from venturing into the large-scale fish business,” explained Mr. Collins Ouma, an official of the beach management uni... #Fishermen #LakeVictoria #Migoricounty

Redfish have made a remarkable comeback since 2011 and after almost 30 years Fisheries and Oceans Canada has announced the moratorium on commercial redfish has come to an end. “Oceana Canada urges Fisheries Minister Lebouthillier and DFO to take a cautious approach. We call on the Canadian government to develop a redfish management plan to prevent the same overfishing that led to its collapse 30 years ago. It must include rigorous monitoring requirements in line with DFO’s Fishery Monitoring Policy,” says Rebecca Schijns, Oceana Canada fishery scientist. “With the rebound of redfish, DFO can demonstrate how a fishery can be re-opened successfully. By following modern policies and management practices, redfish can provide an economic boost to coastal communities for years to come.” Read our full statement here: https://bit.ly/3u87vgE

We see these news articles about whales and we understand the pressure that fishermen are under and Ashored has mission. As CEO, Aaron Stevenson, MTEI, stated: "hopefully our lease model and messaging about being on the side of fishers in full agreement that their livelihood requires them to be champions of ocean protection, that it is in the public’s interest for them to take the appropriate measures through adoption of new practices and gear and to ensure that the long term health of the fishing grounds, and doing so should not be financially punitive. Doing the right thing to safeguard the whales and the whole ocean ecosystem should be a joint venture with the whole market doing their part right from the customers straight through to the harvesters so it is not a burden on anyone but an investment we all make and ultimately benefit from. We all need to do our part to support the fishers who do the hard work and Ashored is offering this seasonal lease model as our way of supporting them by minimizing the upfront capital expense and bearing the technological and regulatory risk on their behalf. #fishing #lobster #crab #fishingindustry #narw #lobsterforum #oceanprotection #livelihood https://lnkd.in/etNS5jJx
