Fishermen Decry Lack of Storage Facilities Fishermen in Migori County are facing significant challenges that hinder their ability to access international markets. Among the primary issues are the lack of proper storage facilities and modern fishing techniques, which impede their efforts to maintain high-quality fish standards required by both local and global markets. The current fish stock shortage in Lake Victoria exacerbates their problems. Additionally, fishermen frequently face arrests and harassment by Ugandan and Tanzanian authorities over alleged trespassing offenses. Middlemen also exploit the situation, further diminishing the fishermen’s earnings. Fishermen from the Lake Victoria beaches of Muhuru, Aneko, Sori, and Migingo have voiced concerns over the stringent consumer requirements set by the European Union (EU). Redfish have made a remarkable comeback since 2011 and after almost 30 years Fisheries and Oceans Canada has announced the moratorium on commercial redfish has come to an end. “Oceana Canada urges Fisheries Minister Lebouthillier and DFO to take a cautious approach. We call on the Canadian government to develop a redfish management plan to prevent the same overfishing that led to its collapse 30 years ago. It must include rigorous monitoring requirements in line with DFO’s Fishery Monitoring Policy,” says Rebecca Schijns, Oceana Canada fishery scientist. “With the rebound of redfish, DFO can demonstrate how a fishery can be re-opened successfully. Wonder who proposed the idea then, you would think the fishing industry would have been involved in the process ... "This is the whole point of actually working with the fishing industry, to come up with good ideas, practical ways to manage the fishery. In a great victory for economic justice for NSW coastal Aboriginal peoples, the Minns Government has announced that three Aboriginal community-owned businesses will receive support to break into the commercial fishing sector. The three groups include the Joonga Land and Water Aboriginal Corporation from Yuin Country on the South Coast, the Yaegl Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation from the NSW North Coast and the Wonnarua Nation Aboriginal Corporation from the Hunter region. Walbunja Elder and 40-year veteran of the fight to reclaim Aboriginal fishing rights, Wally Stewart, said the decision represents recognition of an historical injustice when Yuin fishers were excluded from the commercial industry, and an opportunity for economic self-determination, both central tenets of reconciliation. Wally Stewart’s Joonga Corporation recently won the shark tagging contract for his Country and is part of a Yuin Native Title claim over 450 kilometres of coastline along the NSW south coast.
